Dr. C. Joan Richardson is responsible for the establishment of the University of Texas Medical Branch's neonatal intensive care unit, an accomplishment she considers to be a career highlight.

Having accrued more than 40 years of service as a pediatrician and professor of neonatology, Dr. Richardson is driven to utilize her strong talent for science and math to help others, and found the field of medicine to be the best way to combine her various inclinations. She attended the University of Texas at Austin, graduating in 1966 with a Bachelor of Arts, and earned her Doctor of Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch in 1970. Dr. Richardson is a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics in neonatal and perinatal medicine.

In 1974, Dr. Richardson joined the University of Texas Medical Branch as an assistant professor and director of the division of neonatology. She became an associate professor in 1978, and a professor in 1982. She continues to teach at the University of Texas. Since 2008, Dr. Richardson has been the school's chairperson of the department of pediatrics.

Dr. Richardson is responsible for the establishment of the University of Texas Medical Branch's neonatal intensive care unit, an accomplishment she considers to be a career highlight. She has contributed numerous articles to professional journals, and is an in-demand speaker in her field. Dr. Richardson is a member of the American Academy of Science, the Texas Pediatric Society, and former president of the Texas Perinatal Association.
