She attended the University of Texas at Austin, graduating in 1966 with a Bachelor of Arts, and earned her Doctor of Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch in 1970. Dr. Richardson is a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics in neonatal and perinatal medicine.
In 1974, Dr. Richardson joined the University of Texas Medical Branch as an assistant professor and director of the division of neonatology. She became an associate professor in 1978, and a professor in 1982. She continues to teach at the University of Texas. Since 2008, Dr. Richardson has been the school's chairperson of the department of pediatrics.
