Dr. Alice McPherson is the founder and the scientific director of the Retina Research Foundation (RRF), established in 1969 and dedicated to reducing retinal blindness worldwide.

Dr. McPherson is renowned as an ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal specialist with almost 70 years of innovation in her field. Since childhood, she had wanted to be a doctor, having been fascinated by vision and the structures of the eye. She pursued an education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, graduating in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science. She subsequently obtained a Doctor of Medicine from the aforementioned university in 1951.

Dr. McPherson completed a retina fellowship with Charles L. Schepens, MD, at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in 1959. In 1960, Dr. McPherson began practice as the first full-time woman vitreoretinal specialist in the world. Relocating to Texas, she began her tenure with Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, as an assistant clinical professor of ophthalmology, later serving as an associate clinical professor and then a clinical professor of ophthalmology from 1975 to 1998. Dr. McPherson has excelled as a professor of ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine since 1998. Her contributions to ophthalmology include pioneering scleral buckling procedures, cryotherapy and xenon arc and laser photocoagulation in the treatment of retinal diseases. Board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. McPherson was later presented with an honorary doctorate by the University of Wisconsin in 1997.

Dr. McPherson is the founder and the scientific director of the Retina Research Foundation (RRF), established in 1969 and dedicated to reducing retinal blindness worldwide by funding programs in research and education. Under her leadership, RRF has supported scientific research into the causes and cures of retinal disease, established Research Chairs and Professorships at leading universities, sponsored international fellowships to provide advanced subspecialty training in vision care, and made it possible for young scientists to advance their careers in ophthalmological research.

Dr. McPherson was selected as the inaugural Retina Hall of Fame Awardee at the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2019. She has received dozens of awards and citations for her work in the field, including ophthalmology's highest honor, the Gonin Medal, in 2014. Dr. McPherson was recognized by Harvard Medical School with the Distinguished Alumni Professional Achievement Award in 2012, and by Baylor College of Medicine with an honorary Doctor of Letters in Medicine Degree in 2018. She has maintained her involvement as a member of The Retina Society, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and a founding member of the Schepens International Society. Dr. McPherson is a former member of the editorial board of the American Journal of Ophthalmology and Archives of Ophthalmology.
