Now retired from a successful career in educational publishing and marketing, Ms. Holcomb began with the U.S. Department of Defense in the National Security Agency. She was recruited to serve as an intelligence research analyst during the Viet Nam conflict between 1965 and 1967. Subsequently, she pursued her interests in education and publishing in Mexico, where for nearly 15 years she held leadership positions at two different universities, while taking an active part in educational associations. She authored "Teaching English in Mexico," a reference book printed by the U.S. Department of State. She concluded her tenure in academia as the Dean of Foreign Languages at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the largest university in North America at that time with 300,000 students. Her return to the U.S. in the early 80s was by invitation from Pearson-Longman educational publishing company to become International Marketing Director in New York City, a role that took her to many parts of the world. She was subsequently recruited to McGraw-Hill publishing company to collaborate with developers of educational technology products.
Retiring in 1992, Ms. Holcomb was active as a consultant in Sarasota, FL. She then served on the development committee of the board of trustees for the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art between 1993 and 1999. Most notably, she contributed to the aforementioned museum's membership and fundraising initiatives, garnering sponsorships from the business community for special programs, increased revenue in the museum shop as a business advisor and raised the dollars spent-per-paid-visitor by 82%. Moreover, Ms. Holcomb created and developed a major publishing project, "Rubens to Rhubarb: The Ringling Museum Cookbook," immediately profitable, and headed the marketing campaign, extending sales of museum books and products to third-party distributors.
In her community, Ms. Holcomb has been a generous supporter of the Southeastern Guide Dogs, Inc., in Florida since 2014. She served on the board of directors of the 'Friends of Selby Public Library' in Sarasota and the board of directors of the 'Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center' in Sarasota, spearheading fundraising programs and developing a transitional housing program. She served as committee chairman of the international division of the Association of American Publishers. During her career she has been affiliated with the Information Industry Association, the National Association of Women Consultants, Outstanding Women in Business and Industry and the American Society of Professional and Executive Women.
Before embarking upon her career, Ms. Holcomb earned a Bachelor of Science in education with distinction at the University of Minnesota in 1965. She subsequently obtained a Master of Arts in intercultural education, summa cum laude, at the University of the Americas in Mexico. Following these accomplishments, she completed Ph.D. coursework at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
Among her awards, Ms. Holcomb was presented with the Outstanding Fundraiser of the Year Award from the Association of Fundraising Professionals in 2001. A celebrated Marquis listee, she has been showcased in numerous editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Finance and Business and Who's Who of American Women.
