Dr. Riffenburgh is renowned as a biostatistician and a researcher with a career spanning more than 60 years of service with military and civilian organizations. He began his education at the College of William and Mary, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in 1951 and a Master of Science in 1953. Dr. Riffenburgh continued his academic efforts with Doctor of Philosophy at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1957 and post-doctoral study at Harvard University in 1965-6 and the University of California San Diego in 1968-9.
In 1955, Dr. Riffenburgh began his career with a two-year stint as assistant professor of mathematics at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He worked as assistant professor of mathematics at the University of Hawai'i and mathematical statistician for the U.S. Bureau of Commercial Fisheries in Honolulu from 1957 to 1961. He served as professor and founding head of the statistics department at the University of Connecticut from 1962 to 1970. Dr. Riffenburgh taught statistics intermittently at San Diego State University on sabbatical and then from 1970 to 1974, from 1979 to 1982, and from 1990 to 1993. He has remained on the faculty since 2006.
From 1970 to 1973, Dr. Riffenburgh headed the biomedical program at the Naval Undersea Center in San Diego, California. From 1974 to 1977, he served as a scientist for the U.S. Naval Facility at RAF Brawdy, Wales. Following that, Dr. Riffenburgh acted as a mathematical statistician at the Naval Ocean Systems Center in San Diego from 1977 to 1982.
From 1982 to 1986, Dr. Riffenburgh served as leader of naval operations research at NATO's Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in The Hague, The Netherlands. He maintained his involvement with NATO as the head of operations research at the Undersea Research Centre in La Spezia, Italy, in an A-5 position (naval captain) from 1986 to 1990. In 1991, Dr. Riffenburgh became chief of biostatistics at the Naval Medical Center San Diego, a post he held until 2019. Following that, he returned to teach at San Diego State University.
Dr. Riffenburgh is the author of the book "Statistics in Medicine" and author or coauthor of 155 articles in professional publications. He was recognized as a predoctoral fellow of the National Institutes of Health and received a U.S. Navy Commendation Medal. Dr. Riffenburgh is a fellow of the American Statistical Association, a fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, and a certified professional statistician (PStat).
