John R. Ackerman boasts extensive expertise in projects relating to the design of municipal and industrial wastewater systems

Founding and serving as managing principal of Twin Oaks Consulting, LLC for the past eight years, Mr. Ackerman has continued his exemplary consulting services as an engineer and geologist on behalf of public and private clients spanning more than 25 years. He boasts extensive expertise in projects relating to the design of municipal and industrial wastewater systems, including AMD treatment systems and hazardous waste treatment plants, as well as process design for improved aeration systems, pumping systems, water treatment systems and odor control. Founding Twin Oaks Water Systems Inc. in 2014 and serving as president, he has developed new desalination concepts for treating seawater and fracking water to potable water. Additionally, he is well-versed in managing private and public infrastructure development projects. Some of Mr. Ackerman's other noteworthy roles have included serving as the director of operations for CAN DO Inc., and as the director of public works/city engineer for the City of Hazleton. He started his engineering career with Barrett, Haentjens and Company, the manufacturer of Hazleton Pumps and has also held roles with several other consulting firms throughout Pennsylvania since 1976.

A leader in his community, Mr. Ackerman was active as the chairman, representative, recycling committee member and siting committee chairman of the Lower Luzerne County Solid Waste Management Authority. He also held roles with such organizations as the Tri-Area Recreation Authority and the Hazleton Redevelopment Authority. In relation to his extracurricular activities, he proudly served as the varsity boys soccer coach and an assistant coach at the Bishop Hafey High School. Additionally, he was a founding member, vice president and coach of the Greater Hazleton Youth Soccer Association. Furthermore, Mr. Ackerman flourishes as a member of the Holy Rosary Parish choir and a volunteer for Empty Bowls of Greater Hazleton.

Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Mr. Ackerman attended college locally, acquiring a Bachelor of Science in earth sciences and geology at Pennsylvania State University in 1975. He is a registered professional geologist and registered professional engineer, and board certified in water supply, wastewater engineering, and environmental engineering. A prolific author, Mr. Ackerman has contributed scholarly articles to various peer-reviewed journals and other publications. His most recent contribution was "Water Harvesting from Unconventional Sources," included in the proceedings for the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Innovation Conference in Arlington, Virginia, in 2017.

Mr. Ackerman has served as an instrumental figure for various professional organizations throughout his career. Among his roles with the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers (PSPE), he excelled as the president of the state organization, the Luzerne chapter, vice president of the northeast region and chairman of the geologists' taskforce. He has also been active in various roles with the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration serving five terms as the Penn-Anthracite section chairman, the National Society of Professional Engineers, the International Desalination Association, and more. Mr. Ackerman is a recognized fellow of the National Society of Professional Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Renowned for his work, Mr. Ackerman was responsible for developing fine coal recovery processes, SUPERFUND treatment systems and notably holds patents in the areas of air stripping of liquids using a high intensity mixer and water harvesting from non-potable sources and methods for same. As a testament to his success in the industry, he has been awarded numerous times, particularly when the PSPE named him as their Engineer of the Year, as well as a Young Engineer of the Year and he also was awarded Young Engineer of the Year from SME. Other recognitions to his credit have included an Outstanding Young Citizen and Distinguished Service Award from the Hazleton Jaycees, and an Innovation Conference Award for Best Value in Green Engineering from the ASCE. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Ackerman has been included in the 25th edition of Who's Who in the East and the 28th edition of Who's Who in Finance and Industry.
