Having accrued more than 50 years of inimitable expertise in the field of zoology, Dr. Waring has garnered a laudable reputation as a professor on behalf of Southern Illinois University. Initially launching his career as an assistant professor in 1966, he advanced to the position of associate professor in 1974 and full professor a decade later. Teaching multiple course throughout the length of his tenure, including Vertebrate Zoology, Animal Behavior, Natural History of Vertebrates, and Ornithology, Dr. Waring became well-known on campus for his passion as an educator. He also served as major professor for numerous graduate students in animal behavior and vertebrate zoology. He likewise contributed for a year as a visiting professor at the University of Munich in Germany between 1972 and 1973.
Earning distinction as a scientist, Dr. Waring was selected in 1972 to serve for a year as Research Program Director for the newly established U.S. Marine Mammal Commission, and he continued to serve for several years thereafter as a part-time consultant. He also has performed consulting work for various publications, law firms and other agencies. As a member of science-related organizations, Dr. Waring has most notably served as a founder and a parliamentarian of the Animal Behavior Society. He is also a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, life member of the American Society of Mammologists, and long-term member of the International Society of Applied Ethology and the American Ornithologists Union.
Dr. Waring's areas of scientific interest have included the behavioral traits of wild, captive, and domesticated animals. He has extensively researched the various forms of animal communication and added to our understanding of avian and mammaliian behavior. He has authored chapters and books on animal behavior plus notably contributed articles to various peer-reviewed journals and encyclopedias on topics of basic and applied ethology. And, he has delivered numerous lectures to local groups and abroad on a variety of vertebrate animals and their behavioral traits.
Born and raised in Colorado, Dr. Waring spent his teenage years working for a World War IT veteran, who at war's end had adopted numerous Army husky dogs and established an alpine guest lodge in the wilderness south of Aspen, Colorado, where tourists were provided dog-sledding experiences. Under those circumstances Waring became knowledgeable about animal behavior, wildlife biology, and natural history long before he entered university life. He received a Bachelor of Science at Colorado State University in 1962, a Master of Arts degree at the University of Colorado in 1964, and Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1966 at Colorado State University. While pursuing his degrees, he also served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve from 1957 to 1965.
Dr. Waring received a National Institutes of Health fellowship between 1965 and 1966. He also has received funding from state and federal agencies between 1967 and 2006 and from Deutsche Forshungsgemeinschaft (a German research entity) between 1972 and 1973. He has been recognized with several accolades for his career accomplishments, including the EC. Jean Research Award from the Colorado-Wyoming Academy of Science in 1965, Exceptional Service Award from the Animal Behavior Society in 1996 as well as Distinguished Teaching Award in 2004, plus Outstanding Teaching Award from the College of Science of Southern Illinois University in 2006. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Waring has been featured in the 23rd edition of Who's Who in the Midwest.
