Robert N. Eberhart, PhD, Celebrates More than 25 Years of Excellence in Education and Management

Santa Clara University honored Dr. Eberhart with the Dean's Outstanding Scholar Award in 2017

Alongside his primary career endeavors, he was the vice chair of the U.S.-Japan Joint Commission on Innovation and Entrepreneurship with the U.S. Department of State, academic board member of the Green Bay Packers TitleTown Development Program, and a member on the board of directors of DynEd Inc. Furthermore, he has distinguished himself as an advisory board member of Japan Innovation Network, a member on the board of directors of the Japan Society of Northern California and an academic advisor of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan. Likewise, Dr. Eberhart has garnered a laudable reputation as a guest lecturer at Kobe University, the University of Tokyo, New York University and the University of Michigan.

Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Dr. Eberhart pursued a formal education at Michigan State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in financial administration in 1981. He subsequently attended the University of Michigan, receiving a Master of Arts in microeconomics and Japanese economics in 1987. After serving for numerous years in professional roles, he returned to his studies at Stanford University and received a Doctor of Philosophy in organization theory and entrepreneurship in 2014. Dr. Eberhart is also certified as a private pilot through the Federal Aviation Administration, an amateur astronomer, and a boat builder.

Demonstrating versatility in his profession, Dr. Eberhart has published several peer-reviewed papers, proceedings, and book chapters, most recently including the paper "The Dark Side of Institutional Intermediaries: Junior Stock Exchanges and Entrepreneurship" in the Strategic Management Journal and "Institutions and Types of Entrepreneurship: Interactive Influence of Regulatory and Non-regulatory Institutions" in Strategic Science, both in 2018. Likewise, Dr. Eberhart maintains his professional affiliation with the Academy of Management, the International Society for New Institutional Economics, the Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics, and the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences.

Attributing his success to hard work, Dr. Eberhart has long been possessed of a curious nature and the desire to learn more about the world. As a testament to his success, he has earned numerous accolades over the course of his career, including the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the Academy of Management in 2014, the Dean's Outstanding Scholar Award from Santa Clara University in 2017, and was a finalist for the the Best Published Theory Paper Award from the Academy of Management's OMT Division in 2018. Dr. Eberhart has also received various research grants from Santa Clara University and earned the WAMMY Best Paper Award from the Western Academy of Management in 2016. His 2017 paper, "Failure is an Option: Institutional Change, Entrepreneurial Risk, and New Firm Growth" with Charles Eesley and Kathleen Eisenhardt won the 2020 paper award from the Responsible Research in Business Management institute.
