Drawing a wealth of influence from her mother, who earned distinction as a teacher, Ms. Collins pursued a career in education. She excelled for nearly four decades as a history and government teacher for grades six through 12 before retiring in 2020. Though her career has been suffused with highlights, Ms. Collins is especially proud to have distinguished herself as a Black woman teaching white children after segregation ended in the early-1970s.
An expert in her field, Ms. Collins earned a Bachelor of Arts in the Social Sciences from Virginia Union University in 1952. Continuing her studies, she subsequently completed a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Wesleyan University and a Master of Humanities from the University of Richmond. Outside of her work, she frequently contributed to her community through the local Women's Club and children's camp.
