Dr. Bandyopadhyay has excelled as Commonwealth Professor in the department of electrical and computer engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond since 2011. Originally recruited by the aforementioned university in 2001 as a professor of electrical and computer engineering, he also provided his wealth of expertise to students as a courtesy professor of physics. Additionally, he founded and continues to serve as the director of the Quantum Device Laboratory in the department of electrical and computer engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University. The success of Dr. Bandyopadhyay's laboratory has notably been highlighted multiple times in national and international media and has resulted in several inventions and patents.

In addition to his commitments in academia, Dr. Bandyopadhyay will notably be operating as a Jefferson Science Fellow for one year, where his role will be that of a science and technology advisor on energy and infrastructure issues with the USAID Bureau of Europe and Eurasia. Prior to his tenure at Virginia Commonwealth University, he taught at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln as a professor of electrical engineering and the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana as an assistant and associate professor. Dr. Bandyopadhyay was additionally active at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana as a visiting assistant professor from 1986 to 1987.

Dr. Bandyopadhyay has been responsible for several discoveries and inventions in his field. He has also become a prolific author, having published several editions of the textbook "Introduction to Spintronics" in 2008 and 2015, the 552-page textbook "Physics of Nanostructured Solid State Devices" in 2012, another textbook "Problem Solving in Quantum Mechanics" in 2017, approximately 20 chapters in other books and over 400 articles in scientific research journals and conferences. Dr. Bandyopadhyay also participated on the editorial boards for numerous national and international journals and has been an invited, plenary keynote speaker at over 150 conferences and seminars across four continents.

Dr. Bandyopadhyay held leadership roles in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), serving as the founding chairman of the technical committee on spintronics, past chairman of the technical committee on compound semiconductor devices and circuits, a distinguished lecturer with the Electron Device Society and the Nanotechnology Council and the vice president of the latter council. Among other honors, Dr. Bandyopadhyay has secured several grants for his research from such organizations as the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Office of Naval Research, the Defense Advanced Research Agency, the Army Research Office, the Semiconductor Research Corporation, private foundations, the State of Virginia, the State of Nebraska and the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Bandyopadhyay initially studied in his home country at Indian Institute of Technology, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in technology in electronics and electrical communications engineering in 1980. He later earned a Master of Science in electrical engineering at Southern Illinois University in 1982. Dr. Bandyopadhyay concluded his academic efforts with a Doctor of Philosophy in electrical engineering at Purdue University in 1985.

Celebrated for his success, Dr. Bandyopadhyay received multiple accolades for his research and teaching efforts. He received the College of Engineering Research Award, the College of Engineering Service Award, and the Interdisciplinary Research Award given by the College of Engineering, the College of Science and the Institute for Agriculture and natural Resources from the University of Nebraska, was honored as Virginia's Outstanding Scientist by Governor Terence R. McAuliffe in 2016, received the Distinguished Scholarship Award and University Award of Excellence from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2012 and 2017, respectively, the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award in 2018, and was presented with a Pioneer in Nanotechnology Award from the IEEE in 2020. Other recognitions to his credit include a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2015 and a Distinguished Alumnus Award from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, in 2016. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the American Physical Society, the Electrochemical Society, the Institute of Physics (UK), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Bandyopadhyay has been showcased in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
