Mr. Alfkin is an esteemed youth development and social services Humboldt County who celebrated 20 years of service to the residents of Humboldt County, California prior to his retirement. Before entering the human services field, he enjoyed a full career as a design draftsman for architectural and engineering firms. A talented and motivated student, he was presented with scholarships from the National Action Council for Minorities in Education, the Hoopa Valley Tribe and the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs. Mr. Alfkin earned an associate's degree and AUTOCAD certification from College of the Redwoods, and completed additional coursework at California State University. Mr. Alfkin's architectural portfolio includes a notable 1990 internship with the California Water Resources Control Board's Nonpoint Source Unit.
After 30 years as a draftsman, Mr. Alfkin pursued a career change that would provide him with more stability, benefits and a retirement plan. He accepted a position with the Humboldt County Social Services Branch in 1997, and subsequently focused on youth development and coaching programs in 2000. In recognition of his exemplary work on behalf of young people and the larger community, Mr. Alfkin accepted a Lifetime Achievement Award from the World Congress of Arts, Science, and Communication, as well as a Proclamation from the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors on the eve of his retirement in 1997, commending him for a career of dedicated service.
Mr. Alfkin attributes his success to his lived experiences and the empathy that they have provided him for the youth with which he works. Inspired by figures such as Sri Aurobindo and Rabindranath Tagore, his ultimate career goal was to inspire children to reach their highest level of potential and set themselves up to achieve long-term financial independence. He has previously been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who, Cambridge Who's Who and the World Biographical Hall of Fame, and was nominated for a Republican National Committee Order of Merit. He was further honored as the 2010 Professional of the Year in social services and motivational coaching by the International Biographical Dictionaries. In his retirement, Mr. Alfkin continues to mentor local youth, and enjoys reading and writing historical fiction.
