He was born to Md Nayeemuddin Ansari and Rokaiya Khatoon in Gaya, Bihar, India, where he completed his schooling from St. Paul, Loyala Convent and Gyan Bharti Residential Complex. Dr. Ashraf completed undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral studies in biochemistry at Aligarh Muslim University, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in 2010 as well as a post-graduate diploma in business administration in operations management from the Symbiosis Center for Distance Learning. He is married to Asma Perveen and have one daughter, Sameeha Ashraf, and two sons, Abdullah Ashraf and Mustafa Ashraf.

Dr. Ashraf began his academic career as a lecturer for Amity University in Lucknow, India, in 2010, leading classes in biochemistry, molecular biology, and enzymology until the end of the 2012 academic year. Since 2012, he has been affiliated first as Assistant Professor and then promoted as Associate Professor with King Abdulaziz University, where he continues his neurological research with a focus on galectin proteins and the mechanisms of action of antidiabetic drugs when used in patient populations with dementia. Dr. Ashraf is the author of "Galectins: A Research Overview", editor of 7 books published by international publishing houses like Springer Nature and CRC press, and has contributed to 244 scientific articles (total citations: 3122, h-index: 26, i10-index: 87) published in professional journals of high impact and repute such as Aging Research Reviews, Seminars in Cancer Biology, Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews, Frontiers in Neuroendocrinology, Scientific Reports, Molecular Neurobiology, International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, Frontiers in Neuroscience, to mention a few. He has been notably appointed as the principal investigator in multiple research projects sponsored by King Abdulaziz University, and received many grants of the aforementioned university's Deanship of Science Research Program. Dr. Ashraf has been an active reviewer (303 Publons verified reviewer records) and editor (155 Publons verified editor records) in internationally reputed journals like Scientific Reports, Plos One, Frontiers in Neuroscience, Current Proteins and Peptides, Current Gene Therapy, Current Drug Metabolism and Current Drug Targets. Recently, he has been honorably admitted as Member of the Royal Society of Biology (MRSB, Member No: P0139900).

In addition to his work in academia, Dr. Ashraf has excelled as the Co-Owner & Advisory Board Member of JHINGALALA, a New Delhi-based e-commerce gift shop and private label product venture established in 2014. In the coming years, he hopes to remain active with King Abdulaziz University, and looks forward to continuing to build upon his existing research. Ultimately, Dr. Ashraf hopes to forge multi-institutional research partnerships that will further the body of knowledge on complex issues in pharmacology and neurodegeneration.
