He held several leadership roles in the College of Natural and Agricultural Science, including as the interim dean and director of the Agricultural Experiment Station before being named as a distinguished professor of chemistry in 1997, a title he would continue to hold until being granted distinguished professor emeritus status in 2014. In addition to teaching, Dr. Rabenstein was the dean of the graduate division at the University of California Riverside from 2003 until 2008, rising to become the executive vice chancellor and provost the following year.

Dr. Rabenstein considers his greatest professional accomplishment to have been his direct work with students, and he is proud to have mentored dozens of graduating Master's-level students, doctoral candidates and postdoctoral associates over the course of his career. His research interests have included heavy metal toxicology, NMR spectroscopy and biochemical applications and NMR spectroscopy, and the chemistry of peptides and related compounds. Likewise, Dr. Rabenstein contributed to more than 170 peer-reviewed journal articles and nine book chapters, with thousands of citations to his credit.

Among many other accolades, Dr. Rabenstein is the recipient of the Fisher Scientific Award from the Chemical Institute of Canada and the 2001 University of California, Riverside Faculty Research Lecturer Award, and was a grantee of the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and the Cancer Research Coordinating Committee.
