Jere T. Humphreys Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Jere T. Humphreys has made significant contributions in terms of writing, having contributed over 175 scholarly articles to journals in various languages, some of which are cited frequently.

A distinguished music educator and consultant for five decades, Dr. Humphreys began his career as a band director in the Quitman School District in Quitman, Mississippi, in 1972 and spent most of four years in public education. Transitioning into academia, he went on to teach as an assistant music professor at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama, at West Virginia University and, since 1987, at Arizona State University (ASU) in Tempe. In addition to teaching, Dr. Humphreys was active on various committees at ASU, including the university curriculum committee and the university committee on academic freedom and tenure as its chairman.

Over the past several decades, Dr. Humphreys has become recognized worldwide, teaching as a visiting and guest lecturer on six continents at institutions like Uludag University in Turkey, the University of Macedonia in Greece, and Southwest University in Bulgaria. He has also visited numerous U.S. universities all over the country from Miami to Indiana and Nevada. As a consultant, Dr. Humphreys has worked with the Morrison Institute of Public Policy in Arizona, the U.S. National Endowment for the Humanities and the University of Michigan. He has also served as an academic specialist on behalf of the U.S. Department of State and other institutions.

Some of Dr. Humphreys many accomplishments have included service as an assistant director and clarinet soloist with the 80-member U.S.A. Band on its European tour celebrating the U.S. Bicentennial. Another is advising 45 doctoral dissertations during his tenure in academia.

Dr. Humphreys lectured and served as a keynote speaker dozens of times worldwide. He has made significant contributions in terms of writing, having contributed over 175 scholarly articles to journals in various languages, some of which are cited frequently. He has also contributed chapters to books and was a senior editorial committee member for The New Grove Dictionary of American Music. Additionally, Dr. Humphreys has served in various editorial capacities, including for the Journal of Music Therapy and Action, Criticism and Theory in Music Education, as well as the Journal of Historical Research in Music Education.

Civically, Dr. Humphreys has been aligned with multiple organizations, from Habitat for Humanity to Planned Parenthood of Arizona and the American Red Cross. He is currently a precinct committee chair for the Maricopa County Democratic Party and a member of the Arizona chapter of the Fulbright Association. Other memberships to Dr. Humphreys' credit include the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona, where he was active as the vice president for personnel and vice president for nominating and governance. He led some 43 builds as a volunteer House Leader for Habitat for Humanity over a period of more than two decades. He co-founded Habitat for Humanity Macedonia, and continues to sit on that board of directors.

Born and raised in Tennessee, Dr. Humphreys prepared for his career by receiving a Bachelor of Music in music education at the University of Mississippi in 1971. He subsequently completed a Master of Music in clarinet performance at Florida State University in 1976 and a Doctor of Philosophy in music education at the University of Michigan in 1984. Dr. Humphreys is a life member of the Fulbright Association as well as his three university alumni associations.

Dr. Humphreys was responsible for co-founding and co-funding the William S. English Memorial Scholarship at ASU. Acknowledging his achievements, he has received numerous awards for teaching, volunteer work and other initiatives. Furthermore, he received a Mentorship Appreciation Award from the graduate college of ASU in 2002 and 2003, a Distinguished Teaching Award shortly thereafter in 2006, a President's Volunteer Service Award from President George W. Bush in 2007 and, among other recognitions, a nomination for Professor of the Year at ASU in 2012. He received three research awards from the National Association for Music Education, including the prestigious Senior Researcher Award.
