Rand U. Carter Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Art Scholarship

Dr. Carter has found success as an art professor and author at Hamilton College for over four decades



    UTICA, NY, July 01, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Rand U. Carter has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University in New York, Dr. Carter earned a Master of Fine Arts and a PhD from Princeton University in 1961 and a PhD in 1966. He received a Fulbright scholarship to continue his studies at the Courtauld Institute of Art of the University of London in 1962. Following his ambition to become a concert pianist, Dr. Carter enrolled in a section on the visual arts as part of the core curriculum at Columbia University and decided to focus on art studies.

Dr. Carter counts 17th, 18th and early 19th century European art, historical preservation, neoclassicism, implications of architectural design to the environment and ecology, urban planning and landscape design among his areas of expertise. In 1982 he joined the faculty of McGill University in Montreal. In 1970, he was appointed to the faculty of Hamilton College, a private liberal arts college in Clinton, New York, with which he has excelled as an art history professor for over 40 years. Moreover, Dr. Carter is a member of The Society of Architectural Historians, an international nonprofit organization that promotes the study and preservation of the built environment worldwide, the Reform Cub, London and the Society of Sigma Phi.

Dr. Carter has authored several scholarly works on Karl Friedrich Schinkel, Ludwig Persius, and Peter Joseph Lenné. Other publications include "Educating the Young Architect in the 1830s," a chapter in "Architectural Training in Europe From Vitruvius to the Middle of the 20th Century: History, Theory and Practice" in 2009, as well as "The Project to Rebuild Karl Friedrich Schinkel's Bauakademie, Berlin," and a chapter in "The Venice Charter Revisited: Modernism, Conservation and Tradition in the 21st Century" in 2011. In addition, he has composed three guidebooks in the "Landmarks Society of Greater Utica" series. Dr. Carter has likewise contributed to "The Grove Dictionary of Art" and "The MacMillan Encyclopedia of Architects."

Furthermore, Dr. Carter is active as the secretary of the Chamber Music Society of Utica and a board member with the Clinton Symphony. Moreover, he has served as the chairman for Utica's Commission on Scenic and Historic Preservation and the president of the Landmarks Society of Greater Utica. Additionally, he has always harbored an interest in the country of Egypt, where he has an adopted family which he visits each winter for three months.

After retiring as a Professor of the History of Art in 2017, Dr. Carter was ordained as an Archdeacon in the Orthodox Church.
