Intrigued by the field of oncology, Dr. Perez earned a Bachelor of Science and a Doctor of Medicine from University de Antioquia while gaining valuable expertise in the field as a rotating intern for Hospital University St. Vincente de Paul. Upon graduating from medical school, he completed a residency at Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology and Barnes Hospital. Following this accomplishment, Dr. Perez was accepted as a fellow at MD Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute at the University of Texas.
Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Perez gained valuable expertise in the field as the director of the Radiation Oncology Center at Washington University St. Louis, where he remains active as its chairman. Additionally, he works as a professor of radiation oncology for Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, as a member of the faculty at Barnes Hospital, and as the co-chair, along with Dr. Jay Loeffler, of the medical/technical advisory committee at Mevion Proton Medical Systems. For much of his professional journey, Dr. Perez has maintained a professional interest in carcinoma of the uterine cervix, prostate and breast, as well as carcinoma of the head and neck, lung and various other gynecologic malignancies.
In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Perez aligns himself with the American College of Radiology, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Medical Association, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Therapeutic Radiologists and the American Association for Cancer Research just to name a few. A prolific and seasoned medical expert, Dr. Perez has contributed in excess of 370 publications and has served as the co-editor of "Principles and Clinical Practice of Radiation Oncology," "Principles and Practice of Gynecologic Oncology" and "Technical Basis of Radiation Therapy."
For his professional excellence, Dr. Perez won the ASTRO Gold Medal in 1992, a Gold Medal Award from the American College of Radiology in 1997, and accolades through the Society Espaniola Radiation Oncology and the Latin American Society of Radiation Oncology. Publications such as Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the Midwest have honored him for his outstanding body of work. Though his career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Perez is most proud to have developed techniques to better treat patients.
