Gregory Dean Adkins Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

    LAWRENCEBURG, KY, July 30, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Gregory Dean Adkins with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Adkins celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. After enjoying a wonderful career in academia as an educator and administrator, Dr. Adkins retired as president of Ashland Community and Technical College in Kentucky in June 2012. He spent 11 years serving in this post. Instrumental in the merging of Ashland Community College and Ashland Technical College during 2001 to 2003, he also led several other successful initiatives on campus, including a new campus, a multi-institution Educate the Tri-State website, and a new cosmetology building.

Dr. Adkins' lengthy history in the field also included the prestigious position as president at three other schools: Jefferson College in Hillsboro, Missouri, from 1994 to 2001; Bluefield State College in Bluefield, West Virginia, from 1988 to 1993; and Southern West Virginia Community College in Logan from 1981 to 1988. He also briefly served as a coordinator of instruction and planning for the State Board for Community Colleges and Occupational Education on behalf of the Colorado Community College System in Denver, was associate dean of education and dean of academy affairs at West Virginia Northern Community College in Wheeling, and spent several years at Palm Beach Atlantic College in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he worked his way up from associate professor of education to department chairman of education, chairman of the division of professional studies, and director of teacher education, dating to 1972.

As a business leader, Dr. Adkins was a highly regarded member of the board of directors for Bluefield Regional Medical Center from 1988 to 1992 and Heritage Bank from 2004 to 2009. He was also vice chairman of the advisory council to the president of the West Virginia Board of Regents and the chairman of the legislative affairs committee from 1984 to 1987.

Involved in a number of civic endeavors, Dr. Adkins is a member of Church of Christ and the Jefferson College Foundation, Inc. He is a former member of the West Virginia Enterprise Zone Authority in Charleston and the Mercer County Economic Development Authority. Among other involvements, he was also very active with various educational initiatives, including as a member of the Missourians for Higher Education, the West Virginia Joint Commission for Vocational and Occupational Education, and the committees on transfer and articulation of the Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education.

Dr. Adkins is highly educated. He earned a Bachelor of Science at the University of Charleston in 1962, followed by a Master of Education in science education at Florida Atlantic University in 1968. He then entered the University of Mississippi, where he achieved a Master of Combined Science in 1968 and a Doctor of Education in 1970.

As a part of his commitments to education, Dr. Adkins enjoyed membership with the West Virginia Association of College and University Presidents and the West Virginia Community College Association as a member and past president. He has also been aligned with the Missouri Community College Association and the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in various capacities.

Dr. Adkins' success as a student, educator and community leader earned him an Alumnus of the Year Award from the University of Charleston in 1984, a Veterans of Foreign Wars Award in 1987 and an Ashland Alliance Citizen of the Year Award in 2004. He was named a Richard Weaver Fellow by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute from 1969 to 1970, as well. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Adkins has been showcased in over 50 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the World.
