Dr. Fischell is a physician has had an active clinical practice in complex interventional cardiology at the Ascension-Borgess Heart Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan since 1996. He has been the Program Director of the ACGME accredited interventional cardiology fellowship program at Michigan State University (MSU)- Borgess Medical Center since 1997. He has been appointed as Professor of Medicine at MSU 1996 and as Clinical Professor of Medicine at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo since 2015.

Dr. Fischell has studied at a number of the country's best universities. He received his undergraduate degree (A.B.) in bio-pyschology at Cornell University, graduating as a College Scholar in 1977. He then attended Cornell University Medical College, in New York City, where he was graduated at the top of his class, and having received numerous awards (John Metcalfe Polk Prize, Upjohn Achievement Award, Cornell Prize, Alpha Omega Alpha), receiving his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1981. He then continued his training as an intern and resident in internal medicine at the Harvard/Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston between 1981 and 1984; then completed his cardiology fellowship training at Stanford University between 1984 and 1987. Following his fellowship at Stanford, he joined the faculty there as Assistant Professor of Medicine (1987-1992). After Stanford, he was recruited to be Associate Professor of Medicine (with tenure) and Director of the cardiac catheterization laboratories and Director of interventional cardiology at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN (1992-1996). Following Vanderbilt he left to run the cardiovascular research and teaching in Michigan, as described above. Dr. Fischell is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular diseases and interventional cardiology.

Dr. Fischell is a respected and successful serial medical device entrepreneur. As an inventor-entrepreneur he has co-founded numerous biomedical start-up companies, including Isostent, Inc., Afmedica, Inc. Ostial Solutions, Inc., Svelte Medical, Inc., Angel Medical Systems, Inc., Ablative Solutions, Inc. and most recently (2018) as founder and CEO of CrossLiner, Inc. As chief executive officer, he successfully raised _$100 million for Ablative Solutions.

As a medical researcher and inventor, Dr. Fischell has been the inventor or co-inventor in more than 100 issued US patents. Among his most notable inventions; he pioneered the world's first radioisotope stent, co-invented the BX velocity stent for Johnson & Johnson Company which was also the stent used for the very successful Cypher stent (first drug-eluting coronary stent), co-invented the AngelMed system, invented the Ostial Pro stent positioning system, chemical renal denervation, and most recently next generation guide catheter extension. Dr. Fischell has also given _ 250 invited lectures; published more than 120 papers in peer-reviewed journals, and 25 medical book chapters as a result of his studies and expertise. Lending his time to various community initiatives, Dr. Fischell served on the scientific advisory board for Abbott Vascular from 2008 to 2016. He served in the same capacity for Cordis from 1999 to 2009. Dr. Fischell was elected by his peers as a fellow of the American College of Cardiology. He is also a fellow of the Society of Cardiac Angiography and Interventions and the Andreas Gruntzig Society, and is a member and former council member on circulation of the American Heart Association. He was recently inducted as a Fellow in the National Academy of Inventors. He is actively involved in a number of charitable organizations.

Dr. Fischell has received numerous awards and honors during his college and medical school career and afterward. Honored with a Clinical Investigator Award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) every year between 1987 and 1992, Dr. Fischell also received the Thorax Center Andreas Gruentzig Award for Inventor of the Year in 1997. He also received several ongoing grants from the NIH for his research and received an Advanced Fellowship Award and Grant-in-Aid Award from the American Heart Association. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Fischell has been cited in approximately 20 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
