Mr. Oedy is an esteemed electrician and labor union organizer, entrepreneur, award-winning author, speaker, podcaster and musician. Aligned with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) since 1988, he began his career as an electrician, journeyman and foreman for Local 11, for which he worked for the next 13 years. From 2001 to 2011, he served as an organizer for the IBEW. Mr. Oedy currently excels an international lead organizer and international senior lead organizer, positions to which he was appointed in 2011 and 2018, respectively.
Recognized among the top one percent of union organizers worldwide, Mr. Oedy has authored several books, participates in public speaking engagements and hosts a monthly podcast. He also offers an online course that he recently wrote and released called "How to Get Hired as a Union Organizer." The course includes an overview of what it takes to become a successful union organizer as well as a 30-day action plan and the opportunity to connect with union organizers and partake in a Q&A session.
An award-winning non-fiction author, Mr. Oedy likewise founded Union Organizer Press. He has written five books so far, including "The Million Dollar Organizer: 365 Tips for Professional Union Organizers," "Union Organizer: 365 Tips for Better Union Organizing," "The Green Career Ladder: A Step-by-Step Guide to Profitable Careers in Sustainable Energy" and "Bigger Labor: A Crash Course for Construction Union Organizers." He also published "The Punk Rock Las Vegas Survival Guide: Beer, Bowling and Debauchery Las Vegas Style." Mr. Oedy is currently penning his first novel, with additional books planned.
Aside from his publicity as labor union organizer, Mr. Oedy is a very talented musician and a founding member of a band called The Grim, in which he plays guitar and serves as a songwriter. The band has released several albums and was notably inducted into the Ventura County Music Awards Hall of Fame. He has since also founded Glue Gun, a punk rock band. Over the years, some of Mr. Oedy's songs have appeared in motion pictures and videogames.
As part of his community involvement, Mr. Oedy is a member of Toastmasters International, with which he has been elected as the president, area C-32 governor, and division B governor. He is also affiliated with the Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Oedy initially earned an Associate of Science in electronics at Pierce College in 1984. He subsequently completed a four-year apprenticeship through the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee in 1992. Mr. Oedy ultimately obtained a Bachelor of Arts in labor studies at the National Labor College in 2001.
Mr. Oedy was notably presented with a Beverly Hills Book Award in 2019 in the careers category for "The Million Dollar Organizer." He was also celebrated with an Above and Beyond Union Organizing Award from the IBEW's 9th District in 2014. Furthermore, Mr. Oedy was acclaimed as the Division Governor of the Year by Toastmasters International's 52nd District from 2013 to 2014.
