James Daniel Waldemarson CPA, CMA, CGMA Honored for Work as an Accountant

A consummate professional whose hard work and dedication in his role as a financial products specialist always surpassed that of his colleagues, James Daniel Waldemarson, CPA, CMA, CGMA strengthened the Internal Revenue Service over the course of 32 years.

Although his skills in finances spoke to a lifelong gravitation toward a career in the field, Mr. Waldemarson didn't realize until the last semester of his senior year of high school that accounting would be a good match for him. Initially wanting to be a teacher, he saw a college catalog in a brochure at the school library, which included information on becoming a Certified Public Accountant. Looking over the program, he felt it was something he could do. He enrolled at Penn State University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in accounting in 1968, and later competed his education with a Master of Business Administration from Gannon University in 1977. He became a Certified Public Accountant that same year, a Certified Management Accountant in 1983, and a Charter Global Management Accountant in 2012—passing these exams were significant personal achievements of his.

Mr. Waldemarson launched his career as a staff auditor for Coopers & Lybrand, one of the oldest accounting firms in the United States, before excelling for more than three decades at the IRS. As soon as he set foot in the office, he knew he had to be there; he was independent, devoted to his job, and could work as he saw fit. In addition to his primary endeavors, he has also been active as an instructor in accounting, investments, benefits and risks of products, auditing companies, computer languages, taxes, and related areas he has proven to be an expert in. He has also presided over the Erie County chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants, an organization he first joined in 1976; he developed a website and has served as an editor for the group. Since 1981, he has been a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Although retired, Mr. Waldemarson continues to do lots of pro-bono work as a CPA.

Upon reflection of his accomplished career, he attributes his success to always striving to be better in his work—a drive that came from his parents, whom he dubbed as his greatest mentors. As a finance professional, he committed to things longer than anyone else and, in doing so, was awarded opportunities that other people didn't have. He also adapted quickly to evolving technology, which had a major impact on the industry. To those who wish to do well in their professions, he advised that you should always do the best you can and "take every day as it comes and try to be a decent citizen."

Mr. Waldemarson hopes to be remembered as someone who cared about the job he had.
