With more than 30 years of experience in public service to her credit, Ms. Muniz-Guevara has excelled as an advocate advisor for the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health for a number of years. In her present position, she assists those with mental health issues throughout the northern part of the San Fernando Valley with housing issues, urgent care, policymaking, program development and applications for social security and education programs. Ms. Muniz-Guevara is committed to developing strategies to provide support in the mental health crises affecting the second largest county in the United States while advocating on local, national and international levels.
Dedicating her career to helping those living who struggle with their mental health, Ms. Muniz-Guevara initially established social clubs for the mentally ill throughout the San Fernando Valley before working as a coordinator for social clubs in Los Angeles County. She subsequently served as the mental health commissioner for Los Angeles County's Third District prior to being elected as an advisor on the subject for Los Angeles Mayors James Hahn and Antonio Villaraigosa. Ms. Muniz-Guevara was additionally active with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health as a voting member for Service Area Two and the co-chairperson of the Service Area Leadership Team for policy procedures and programs.
Hailing from a family of 11 in Harlington, Texas, Ms. Muniz-Guevara's advocacy for mental health is an incredibly personal matter. In addition to her father facing homelessness as a result of his undiagnosed mental health struggles, she was driven to become a mental health professional after a difficult childhood, which was tragically punctuated by her brother's death (RAUL GUEVARA JR.). After suffering from a panic attack, his symptoms were misinterpreted as drug use by the Los Angeles Police Department, who responded with a violent chokehold that killed him. Furthermore, Ms. Muniz-Guevara has lived with dyscalculia, dyslexia, depression and bipolar disorder, the latter of which has also affected all six of her children including her grandchildren and her 26-year-old daughter has autism. As she explains it, "My siblings along with my family play a role in the family dynamics, which creates a fragmented relationship between the five sisters due to the denial of existing mental health in the family tree and the existence of stigma worldwide. Within mental health you are either an advocate for your loved ones or in denial and distant."
Ms. Muniz-Guevara prepared for her professional ventures by CITA class-room coursework in translation at California State University, Northridge, the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act program and collegiate coursework at a number of mental health conferences. A bilingual translator, she has further flourished as a founding member of the Lake View Terrace Neighborhood Council, a founder of The Victory Club House and Wellness Center, a leader and fundraiser for her local church and served in special education in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Outside of her primary professional responsibilities, Ms. Muniz-Guevara was additionally active with Project Return the Next Step and collaborated with Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services to provide the less fortunate with Christmas gifts. Moreover, she was proudly part of the Hispanic Congress for Mental Health in Washington, D.C. Among the many highlights of her career, Ms. Muniz-Guevara fondly recalls working with both President Vicente Fox and President George Bush to help with border issues, as well as the deprivation of water from the poor while they send it to THE RICH.
In light of her exceptional undertakings, Ms. Muniz-Guevara has accrued several accolades throughout her career. Listed in the Wall of Tolerance at the Southern Poverty Law Center, she was notably presented with a Certification and Recognition from the U.S. Senate for her work as an advisor. Furthermore, Ms. Muniz-Guevara received Letters from the White House and a Liaison Appreciation Award from the Los Angeles County Mental Health Commission. As well as a Community Partnership Appreciation from Department of Mental Health Los Angeles County. Along with a number of Volunteer of the Year awards from Client Run and Client Driven Centers.
Attributing her success to her deep and abiding Christian faith, Ms. Muniz-Guevara has greatly emphasized the need for the early diagnosis of mental illnesses, so as to improve the quality of life and decrease the probability of homelessness and addiction for those with mental health issues. She has also worked diligently to break the stigma of mental health issues in her family, as well as in the Hispanic population, including working alongside President Bill Clinton's staff to train in Mobilization, Media, Organizing and Outreach within your local Community. Looking toward the future, Ms. Muniz-Guevara hopes to continue providing her wealth of knowledge to mental health awareness and education campaigns within the system.
