Lawrence Litt, PhD, MD, Recognized by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Litt served as an expert in anesthesia and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS)

Dr. Lawrence Litt has authored 88 full-length peer-reviewed publications in major professional journals.

KENSINGTON, CA, May 24, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Lawrence Litt, PhD, MD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

In 2013 Dr. Litt, emeritus professor of anesthesia and radiology at the University of California San Francisco, completed a distinguished academic career that began in 1963 with a Columbia College B.A. degree in physics. His physics education continued at Harvard's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in Cambridge, Massachusetts where, in 1971, he obtained a physics PhD based on elementary particle experiments at the Cambridge Electron Accelerator. After the Harvard graduation, a Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory summer neuroscience course, taught by future and past Nobel laureates, initiated thoughts about having a future medical career. The switch to a medical career, however, was deferred by a postdoctoral physics position at Rockefeller University (1971-1974), experimental work at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, and three academic years as an Assistant Professor of Physics at Michigan State University (1974-1977). In 1979 Dr. Litt's MD degree was awarded at the University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine, where he remained for an internship at the University of Miami Affiliated Hospitals. In July 1982, after completing his anesthesia residency at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), Dr. Litt became an assistant professor in Stanford's Anesthesia Department. During his first six months the UCSF Radiology Department, led by Professor Alexander Margulis, established extensive human and laboratory resources for medical research with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and spectroscopy (MRS). Dr. Litt returned to UCSF as an assistant anesthesia professor with a joint appointment in radiology. Dr. Litt's twenty-five years as an NIH-funded principal investigator began in 1988. Spectrometers with 11 and 20 Tesla magnetic strength provided very accurate one-dimensional and two-dimensional MRS studies of brain hypoxia and ischemia. Preclinical studies of adult and neonatal brain metabolism provided insight to anesthesia protection and rescue in brain hypoxia and ischemia. Dr. Litt's final preclinical experiment used metabolomics, where "omics" indicates a data analysis method created in the Human Genome Project, to identify different treatment and outcome groups. Clinically Dr. Litt specialized in anesthesia for neurological surgery, and was a member of the Society for Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care. As a commitment to his field, Dr. Litt was active on committees at the National Institutes of Health, and the American Society of Anesthesiology. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the American College of Physicians, and the UK Royal Society of Medicine. He has authored 88 full-length peer-reviewed publications in major professional journals. He attributes his success to the many years of inspiration and guidance provided by his mentors and research collaborators. A short list includes the following esteemed professors: James Watson, Edward Purcell, Frank Pipkin, William Hamilton, Ronald Miller, Thomas James, Pak Chan, and Donna Ferriero. Looking toward the future, Dr. Litt aspires to complete and publish a memoir focused on thought provoking career experiences.
