Dr. Vinroot is an exceptional emergency, general and tropical medicine physician, military physician, and medical educator who has garnered extensive expertise both locally and abroad over the past decade. He has served as the vice president and global medical director for Freeport McMoRan in Phoenix, a U.S.-based international mining and oil/gas company, since 2019. In his role, he is directing its medical and public health response to the coronavirus pandemic as the sole medical health care provider and medical expert. Managing all of its medical assets, he also oversees all medical providers, benefits, wellness programs, and hiring and firing protocols. As part of his professional commitments, Dr. Vinroot also conducts clinical work on the Apache Indian Reservation in Southern Arizona.

As an emergency medicine physician, Dr. Vinroot worked with the Cleveland Clinic in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, from 2016 to 2019 and the International SOS in Saudi Arabia in 2016. He simultaneously served as a senior emergency physician in the department of emergency medicine for the Ochsner Health Systems in New Orleans from 2009 to 2019. As a U.S. military veteran, Dr. Vinroot also upheld several leading roles, including assignments with the U.S. Navy in Afghanistan as a trauma team leader and in the Horn of Africa as an emergency medicine physician. He has excelled as a commander with the U.S. Navy, 4th Medical Battalion of the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy Medical Service since 2013.

In addition to his responsibilities as a physician, Dr. Vinroot joined the faculty at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in 2021 as a clinical assistant professor. He initially became involved in education as a course director of medicine and society at the Ochsner Clinical at the University of Queensland School of Medicine from 2012 to 2016. He subsequently found success teaching medicine as a senior lecturer at the university from 2013 to 2020. Furthermore, he taught courses at the Cleveland Clinic in the Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University from 2018 to 2020.

Throughout his career, Dr. Vinroot has served on numerous boards, including the North Carolina Medical Foundation, the Center for the Study of the American South at UNC-Chapel Hill, and the Healthcare Leadership Council. Disseminating his research, he has also been published several times in peer-reviewed journals and has lectured frequently at professional conferences.

Dr. Vinroot has extensive humanitarian expertise. He has traveled throughout the world and has served Doctors Without Borders in Kenya and as an emergency response doctor during the Haitian earthquake. He continues to serve as a field physician in Nicaragua since 2006 and as a coordinator of Freeport McMoran Public Health Response since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Giving back to his local community, Dr. Vinroot has served on the board of directors for the Saint Thomas Community Health Clinic. He has also volunteered his time with the Rebuild Homeless Clinic and Unity Homeless Service.

Dr. Vinroot graduated from the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill in 1992 with a Bachelor of Arts in history, followed by a Master of Public Health in global public health at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public health in 2004 and a Doctor of Medicine in 2004. He later completed an emergency medicine residency at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center between 2004 and 2008, during which time he served as chief resident from 2007 to 2008. Certified in emergency medicine through the American Board of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Vinroot is a licensed health authority medical consultant physician through the Health Authority of Abu Dhabi, certified by the Bureau of U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, and certified in advanced trauma life support, advanced cardiovascular life support, pediatric advanced life support, and basic life support.

Dr. Vinroot is a professional member of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and the Wilderness Medical Society. He is also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars for his service in the military.

Honoring his achievements, Dr. Vinroot received an Emergency Medical Services Best Resident Award from Acadian Ambulance in 2008 and a Distinguished Alumni Award from the UNC School of Medicine in 2017. He was then honored with a Fred Foard Lecturer Award and a Distinguished Alumni Award from the UNC School of Global Health in 2011. Dr. Vinroot was also decorated with an Afghanistan Campaign Medal, a Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Medal, and, among numerous other accolades, both the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps commendation and achievement medals and the Global War of Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.
