In recent years, Dr. Wallace served as an Associate Dean for Research and Personnel in the University's College of Humanities and Fine Arts.
COLUMBUS, OH, August 18, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Rex E. Wallace has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. While coming of age, Dr. Wallace benefited richly from the tutelage of his high school Latin language teacher, Dennis Thatcher, who served as an inspiration throughout the course of his subsequent career. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Latin from the University of Nebraska in 1974; he received a Master of Arts in Greek and Latin from his alma mater, and a Master of Arts and a PhD in linguistics from The Ohio State University. After spending a year as the Oscar Bronner Fellow at the American Academy in Rome, he joined the Classics Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. As a professor there, he taught the classical languages, the pre-Roman languages of ancient Italy, historical linguistics, and Sanskrit. He spent many summers at the archeological site of Poggio Civitate (Murlo, Italy) as epigrapher of Etruscan inscriptions.
In recent years, Dr. Wallace served as an Associate Dean for Research and Personnel in the University's College of Humanities and Fine Arts before retiring as professor emeritus in 2018. Throughout the course of his career, he authored and co-authored numerous publications, including Zikh Rasna. A Manual of Etruscan Inscriptions and Language, The Archaeology of Language at Poggio Civitate (Murlo), "Latin sum, Oscan súm, sim, esum," "The Latin Alphabet and Orthography," "The Italic Languages," and "An Umbrian inscription from Poggio Civitate." Dr. Wallace also founded and served as co-editor of Rasenna, the Electronic Journal of Etruscan Archaeological and Linguistic Studies.
Dr. Wallace's Rome Prize Fellowship and year's residence at the American Academy in Rome were one of the highlights of his career. During his tenure at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, he was the recipient of an HFA Distinguished Teaching Award, a Chancellor's Excellence in Service Award, and a Provost's Exceptional Merit Award. Looking toward the future, Dr. Wallace intends to continue research and publication in his field of study, and to enjoy his retirement.
