With more than a decade of experience in sustainable materials and biofuels, Mr. Gibbs is the founder and chief executive officer of Dama Distributing, provider of the only truly sustainable and compliant plastic-free packaging for the hemp and cannabis industry. In this role, he oversees a staff of eight, working closely with a five-person sales team to educate customers about alternative materials, sustainability and circular economies so they can make the best choices for their companies and the planet. In 2021, Mr. Gibbs founded a second company, Dama BioPlastics, which is producing the first fully-hemp-derived, backyard- and home-compostable bioplastic that is designed for injection molding applications.
During his studies at Weber State University and Salt Lake Community College, Mr. Gibbs studied automotive technology with a focus on alternative fuel. In the process, he became alarmed at the huge amount of waste and pollution caused by the automotive industry and transitioned his focus to sustainable bioplastics. Since founding Dama Distributing in 2018, Mr. Gibbs's team has put two million pounds of sustainable alternatives on the market while working exclusively with materials that are home- and backyard-compostable or infinitely recyclable.
To commemorate his accomplishments, Mr. Gibbs was named to ColoradoBiz Magazine's GenXYZ top 50 most influential young professionals list and was nominated for a Beyond Plastic award by BeyondPlastic.net. He won the 2022 NoCo investor pitch contest and the Emerge investor pitch contest, and his company was named the best wholesale sustainable cannabis packaging company by AI Global Media. In 2020, he received a "love your planet" award from Cannabis Doing Good. To remain aware of developments affecting his field, Mr. Gibbs holds memberships with the Plastic Pollution Coalition, the Good Business Colorado Association and the Global Hemp Association.
Looking toward the future, Mr. Gibbs hopes to start a commercial-sale bioplastic production facility in Colorado within the next two years. His goal is to use waste feedstocks and agricultural waste to produce compostable plastics that are designed for injection molding applications, replacing current products that use petroleum plastic.
