Dr. Carnes-McNaughton is the program archaeologist and curator of the Fort Bragg Cultural Resources Management Program through which she acts as a tribal liaison officer and communicates with the federally recognized Indian nations. Specifically, she manages Heritage Family Research to interact with those who once resided in the area that is now Fort Bragg and help them to discover or recover their family history. She earned a PhD in anthropology from the University of North Carolina in 1997, and she acquired graduate studies from the University of Tennessee and received a bachelor's degree from Georgia State University. She harbors a particular interest in pottery making in the southeastern United States, as well as regional potters; in fact, her dissertation was focused on the craft. Ultimately, Dr. Carnes-McNaughton values deep human experiences alongside intense academic training toward a comprehensive outlook and integration across diverse vocations.

Dr. Carnes-McNaughton is proud to have won the Secretary of the Army Award in 2012. She also received the Department of the Army Civilian Service Commendation Medal (2022) and Civilian Service Appreciation Medal (2021). She is also a prolific author with works that include "The Mountain Potters of Buncombe County," published in 2018 and articles in "Ceramics in America, Vol. 10" and the history of kilns. She is also the co-author of "Blackbeard's Sunken Prize: The 300-Year Voyage of Queen Anne's Revenge," released by the University of North Carolina Press, a book that was the culmination of nearly 20 years of research. Dr. Carnes-McNaughton plans to publish another monograph in the near future.

Dr. Carnes-McNaughton is committed to maintaining a crucial professional network through memberships with the Society for Historic Archaeology, the Southeastern Conference of Archaeology, and the North Carolina Archaeology Council.
