Kirk L. Peterson, MD, has been Inducted into the Prestigious Marquis Who's Who Biographical Registry

    RANCHO SANTA FE, CA, October 10, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Kirk L. Peterson, MD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

With more than 50 years of excellence as an educator, physician and researcher, Dr. Peterson dedicated his career to improving the field of cardiovascular medicine. Prior to embarking upon his professional journey in health care, he earned a bachelor's degree from Stanford University in 1960 and a Doctor of Medicine from Cornell University in 1963. He subsequently underwent a research fellowship at the University of California (UC) San Diego School of Medicine in 1970 and became an assistant professor for the school in 1971, advancing to a role as an associate professor in 1975, and Professor of Medicine in 1981. During this time, he established a university-based medical practice in 1970, working thereafter as a cardiovascular specialist until his retirement from clinical care of patients in 2020. For more than 25 years, Dr. Peterson held the Edith and William Perlman Chair of Cardiology at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. He also served during his academic career as a Visiting Professor of Medicine at the University of Geneva (1979-80) and at the University of Lausanne (1997-1998), both in Switzerland.

During the initial 20 years of employment at UC San Diego, Dr. Peterson also served as the director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory at the UCSD Medical Center Hillcrest, holding this responsibility for 20 years. In this capacity, he performed various procedures on patients with cardiovascular issues while teaching trainees the same procedures. He collaborated closely with cardiac surgeons in the evaluation of patients while also conducting independent evaluations before referring them to cardiovascular surgery.

Dr. Peterson served simultaneously during the period of 1985-1990 as head of the cardiac section at the UCSD Medical Center Hillcrest. In 201 1, he was asked to assume the directorship of the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center for the UC San Diego Health System, a position he held until 2013, at which time he took on the role of Deputy Dean within the School of Medicine, retiring fully in 2020.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Peterson has contributed a great deal of research to the field of cardiology. His first of over 100 peer-reviewed publications was in the New England of Journal of Medicine in 1967, an article that described the development of pulmonary arterial webs as a late or chronic consequence of thromboembolic disease. Also, as lead editor, he compiled a textbook entitled "Cardiac Catheterization: Methods, Diagnosis, and Therapy," published by W.B. Saunders Co., a Division of Harcourt Brace Jovanovich (HBJ) Inc. Later, Dr. Peterson served for three years on the corporate board of HBJ. In recognition of his medical competence, as well as his role in reaching and research, he has been recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Cardiology. He also received the Revelle Medal in 2020, recognizing sustained, distinguished and extraordinary service to the campus of the University of California, San Diego.

Looking toward the future, Dr. Peterson plans to spend more time with his family, including his wife, surviving siblings, and grandchildren. He looks forward to continuing his consultantship with a fledgling company in San Diego that aims to develop new pharmaceuticals for helping patients with heart failure and heart muscle disease. This project has thus far been supported by three grants from the National Institutes of Health and is based on intellectual property that was developed initially at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.
