CRYSTAL RIVER, FL, October 20, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- K.C. Nayfield, DVM, has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. With more than four decades of experience to his credit in the field of veterinary medicine, Dr. Nayfield earned distinction as the owner of Midway Animal Hospital between 1982 and 2009, whereupon he sold the practice. Throughout this period, he bore a particular specialization in veterinary orthopedics, and notably performed over 900 tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) procedures across the span of 25 years. Following the sale of Midway Animal Hospital, Dr. Nayfield continued to distinguish himself as a surgeon for more than a decade until his retirement.
Though his professional journey has been filled with many memorable moments, Dr. Nayfield is most proud to have availed himself to so many clients. Many of the surgeries he performed were otherwise only available at referral-based institutions, which many could not afford. By offering his services for various procedures, he was able to save many animals that would have otherwise passed. Likewise, he ran several spay/neuter clinics in the Bahamas on the outer islands that lacked veterinary care. He also performed goodwill trips to Cuba to deliver medical supplies and lecture on canine knee surgeries. Additionally, Mr. Nayfield broke new ground as an innovator by pioneering the "Nayfield Knot," a unique transfixation knot for completely ligating pedicles.
Outside of his primary career endeavors, Dr. Nayfield has found success as a bestselling author. His book, "Some of My Best Patients Were Animals: Memoirs of a Florida Veterinarian," was ranked 22nd in the category of veterinary medicine by Amazon's Kindle store in 2021. He has also dabbled in songwriting, releasing "Stories," an album of 14 original songs, in 2019.
Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Dr. Nayfield studied biology at Florida State University, from which he received a Bachelor of Science, cum laude, in 1974. Following this accomplishment, he went on to attend the University of Florida, where he received a Master of Science in veterinary physiology in 1978 and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1980. During this time, he also served as an animal health aide and veterinary trainee with the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Known for his contributions as a civic-minded citizen, Dr. Nayfield has been have been an active Rotarian for almost 40 years and has also been noted as an avid conservationist, currently serving as president of Friends of the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge. He previously served as president of Conservation Florida, a nationally-accredited land trust that is dedicated to protecting the state's natural landscapes, from 2021 to 2022, and the founder and director of the Nature World Wildlife Sanctuary between 1985 and 1995. He and his wife would later go on to purchase a conservation easement on 136 acres of land in North Florida called Nayfield Acres. It is a tree farm for long leaf.
In accounting for his success, Dr. Nayfield credits his commitment to hard work, as well as his passion for the craft of surgery and his innate love for animals. Looking toward the future, he hopes to remain active in his local community and in land preservation efforts.
