FALLS CHURCH, VA, November 08, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Kathleen Crane, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Renowned as an arctic international environmental consultant, Dr. Crane is an oceanographer who has been serving as the sole proprietor of ArcticLynx and as an affiliate researcher in the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa since 2016. Experienced in oceanography, geology, geophysics, marine life, and various arctic environmental programs, Dr. Crane was initially inspired to pursue a career in her field so that she could travel and see and experience as much of the world as possible.

Pioneering her field, Dr. Crane has been recognized as one of the discoverers of hydrothermal vents from the seafloor in the Galapagos area in 1976, which subsequently led to the discovery of deep ocean life and the concept that life on planet earth many have been generated through the chemicals and the heat erupting from volcanoes mixing with ocean water deep in the sea. These contributions were notably proposed by Dr. Crane while she was still a graduate student.

Dr. Crane's extensive career since that time has led her to participate in more than 40 expeditions at sea, including several deep dives, and serve as the chief scientist for 27 multinational expeditions with such countries as Russia, Japan, France, Italy, and Norway. Among other accomplishments, Dr. Crane served as an invited oceanographer for the National Geographic Society and Tokyo Broadcasting, was responsible for briefing congressional staffers and representatives with regard to the state of the contamination in the Arctic, and was invited as one of two American participants on board a Swedish expedition to celebrate the 100th anniversary of a Swedish polar explorer named Otto Nordenskjöld.

Previously, Dr. Crane was a program manager in the Arctic Research Program of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration from 2001 to 2015. She also served as a supervisory oceanographer at the Naval Research Laboratory between 1993 and 2001 and was a senior research scientist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University from 1979 to 2001. Additionally, Dr. Crane spent many years in the classroom at Hunter College at the City University of New York where she rose from an associate to a full professor from 1985 to 2001. Besides her full-time commitments, she was a visiting senior scientist with the Environmental Defense Fund where she notably developed the Arctic At Risk Program and managed the Arctic Environmental Risk initiative at the Naval Research Laboratory. Dr. Crane was also a visiting research scientist in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Oslo in Norway and a visiting scientist at the University of California (UC) Santa Barbara, the University of Hawaii, and the University of Paris.

A talented author, Dr. Crane authored "Sea Legs: Tales of a Woman Oceanographer" in 2004, which is presently recognized as a top-selling book. "Sea Legs" is notably the story of her personal journey as one of the first female oceanographers to graduate from the world-renowned Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. In addition to raising awareness about how the progression of science was controlled by international politics, she also brings to light the strain that women face in getting their contributions in the field known. Apart from her book, Dr. Crane has contributed more than 80 peer-reviewed articles in various scientific journals.

Dr. Crane's rich educational background began at Oregon State University where she acquired a Bachelor of Arts in geology with a minor in German in 1973. She subsequently spent time abroad in Germany where she completed coursework in geophysics at the University of Stuttgart between 1971 and 1972. Dr. Crane also pursued an advanced degree, graduating from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego with a Doctor of Philosophy in oceanography in 1977. Additional educational pursuits to Dr. Crane's credit included serving as a postdoctoral researcher at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution from 1977 to 1979, and completing additional coursework in live-action video documentary production at the California Institute of the Arts between 1984 and 1985.

To remain abreast in her field, Dr. Crane is a member of the American Geophysical Union. She is also active as a member of The Explorers Club.
