An experienced French educator who has been teaching primary and secondary education for more than 30 years, Ms. Marcel is presently a faculty member of the Virginia Beach City Public Schools at the district's Frank W. Cox High School. Acquired in 2017, Ms. Marcel excels in her role, teaching classes, being actively engaged in instructional design and instructional technology, writing curriculum, and serving as a mentor to her many students.
Recognized as a highly successful and diverse school district, the Virginia Beach City Public Schools notably offer both primary and secondary education, serving approximately 70,000 students and employing over 10,000 employees.
Prior to teaching for her present school district, Ms. Marcel spent three years with Buckingham County Public Schools in Virginia and Henrico County Public Schools in Henrico, Virginia. Throughout the course of her professional career in the classroom, she has taught students in grades 6-12, ranging from Exploratory French all the way through Advanced Placement French.
Ms. Marcel has also been involved with numerous school committees, including the World Languages textbook adoption committee and the annual foreign language assessment performance scoring committee, and has been very active with the middle and high school French Clubs and the Frank W. Cox High School French Club and Honor Society. Furthermore, Ms. Marcel had the opportunity to chaperone students on her first trip abroad to France during the summer of 2021 where they had the experience of embracing the French culture.
Looking toward the future, Ms. Marcel aims to be more involved in the industry either as a world language coordinator or instructional specialist. She also aspires to write a curriculum for a textbook.
Avid about giving back, Ms. Marcel has been affiliated with Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Ms. Marcel has also been active with various local initiatives, providing warm blankets for needy children as a part of the French Honor Society at her high school and contributing to food drives to support the homeless community.
Ms. Marcel is of Italian and Portuguese descent. While coming of age, she realized that she wanted to either work in education, nursing, or the law. After graduating from Clover Hill High School in 1994 with an advanced diploma, she chose education so that she could work with young adults. Ms. Marcel subsequently received a Bachelor of Arts in French language teacher education at Randolph-Macon College in 1998 and a Master of Arts in curriculum and instruction at Virginia Tech in 1999. Additional educational pursuits to Ms. Marcel's credit include a postgraduate professional license from the Commonwealth of Virginia.
To remain aware of developments in her field, Ms. Marcel is a member and treasurer of the Student Virginia Education Association at Randolph-Macon College and the American Association of Teachers of French. She is also a member of Kappa Delta Pi and Pi Delta Phi.
