Aligning with Chaucer's reflection in Canterbury Tales, "And gladly would he learn and gladly teach," learning and teaching are my twin innate passions which attracted me into academia, finding there the perfect place that concurrently provides the opportunity to teach of one's learning while learning of that worthy to teach. A firm foundation of physics endorsed my dominating career interests of economics and law, culminating in December 2022 with my crowning achievement of Doctorate of Juridical Science (SJD) with 4.00 GPA. Within that quest I sought to answer whether nineteenth century competition law could function to regulate twenty-first century Big Tech innovations, a fascinating study with an anticipated 2023 publishing.
Inspiration came daily through the words and actions of my parents who by their lives exemplified Biblical precepts which instilled in me a worthy foundation for my life. "In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He will direct thy paths." Proverbs 3:6. Fascinated since childhood by the majesty and mystery of flight, I naturally found inspiration in fellow North Carolinian native sons, the Wright Brothers who honored the state with the motto, "First in Flight." Likewise, there is great inspiration to be found within the writings of our nation's founding fathers as they incorporated the inherent characteristics of mankind into a legal self-governance document that continues to withstand the test of time.
Success, I have found begins within a human soul. Although recognizable singularly by the accomplishment of individually distinguishable goals with underlying aspects of projected potential obstacles, success is multifaceted. It shows itself to be analogous to the developing of a trickle of water spurting from an ice-melting mountain spring that feeds the vast ocean. It applauds itself as the catalyst for transformation along an uncharted path. Success provides both positive and negative effects to those who are the recipients of its change; Hitler and Churchill were both successful within their soul's perspective. Success celebrates itself with grand and enduring emotion.
Should time travel be a possibility allowing the opportunity to tell my 18 year old self a thing or two, the first bit of wisdom to instill would be to diligently uphold my integrity; nothing can replace lost trust. And then second would then be chastise any hint of slacking in perseverance. To not cross the finish line, to not stretch oneself beyond one's own expectations always brings the same results, which is that success will not be yours to enjoy.

To those who follow my footsteps into the halls of academia I would offer the advice to nurture an insatiable desire to learn, and thus encourage lifelong learning for your fellow academicians and students alike. And then I would offer to my fellow professors to not only consider teaching just the transference of knowledge but to also wrap knowledge in wisdom and discernment and give it freely as an invaluable gift.
Academia offers such an expanse of potential for oneself and for all those who address you as professor. I found it an indescribable privilege to be honored with that responsibility. It is an ideal profession for those who love serving others and have the desire to help students succeed in life as well as recognize their skills and talents. Thus, revealing opportunity to utilize those realized talents for good, with effects expanding through and beyond the concentric circles of life.
