Dr. Dirk C. Gibson Recognized for Excellence as a Prolific Author

A published author, Dr. Gibson served as an associate professor at the University of New Mexico

    TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, NM, December 22, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Dirk C. Gibson has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Hailing from a multifaceted background in several diverse fields, Dr. Gibson earned distinction as a Professor of communication and journalism at the University of New Mexico, where he served from 1996 until his retirement, whereupon he was bestowed with emeritus status. In this capacity, he taught students a variety of subjects, including public relations, mass communication, media ethics, serial murder communication, outer space communication, and magazine writing, among many others. Previously, he had worked as a professor from the late-1970s until the present at numerous academic institutions, including Empresarial University of Costa Rica, Georgia Southern University, Georgia State University, Augusta College, Auburn University, Indiana University and the University of Arizona. He was a reporter and area news coordinator for the Elwood Call-Leader, a small daily newspaper in Indiana.

Outside of his work in education, Dr. Gibson has distinguished himself as a national expert on various topics, including product recalls, serial killers, journalism, public relations, space travel and history. Reflecting his manifold interests, he has written a great many books, including "The Role of Communication in the Practice of Law" in 1991, two volumes regarding recall practices on behalf of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2000, "Serial Murder for Profit: Multiple Murder for Money" in 2009, "Jack the Writer: A Verbal and Visual Analysis of the Jack the Ripper Correspondence" in 2013, "Commercial Space Tourism: Impediments to Industrial Development and Strategic Communication Solutions" in 2015, "Terrestrial and Extraterrestrial Space Dangers: Outer Space Peril, Rocket Risks, and the Health Consequences of the Space Environment" in 2015, "The Most Feared Man in America: A Rhetorical Perspective on the Political Myths of J. Edgar Hoover" in 2019, "Way Worse than Attica: The 1990 Riot at the Penitentiary of New Mexico" in 2021, and "How J. Edgar Hoover Directed the FBI Through Marginalia" in 2022, among many others.

Highly sought after for his diverse insight, Dr. Gibson has also delivered various presentations and refereed papers at conferences relevant to his areas of expertise, such as the Annual Homicide Conference, the Southern Speech Communication Association Annual Convention, the American Legal Studies Association Convention, the International Academy of Business Disciplines Annual Convention and the American Institute on Aeronautics and Astronautics Conference, to name only a few. He has also served as a manuscript reviewer, article writer and editor for numerous publications, including Public Relations Quarterly, the Journal of Global Intelligence & Policy, Retreats from Oblivion, the Journal of Travel & Tourism Marketing, the Business Research Yearbook, and others. Additionally, Dr. Gibson's scholarly output regarding serial murder communications has yielded several interviews on a number of prominent media outlets, such as FOX, CNN, the Discovery Channel, the Entertainment Network, USA Today, the New York Post, Time Magazine and Vice.

Before embarking upon his professional journey, Dr. Gibson sought a formal education at Southern Illinois University, from which he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1977. Following this accomplishment, he continued his studies at Indiana University, where he attained a Master of Arts at Indiana University in 1979 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1983.

To commemorate his accomplishments, Dr. Gibson has been bestowed with accolades throughout the course of his professional journey, including recognition among the Outstanding Young Men of America and acknowledgements for publishing highly rated papers regarding Jack the Ripper and Dennis Lynn Rader in 2003 and 2006. Among his most notable career achievements, he is most proud to have been asked by the New Mexico Association of Sheriffs and Chiefs of Police to engage in a three-hour talk on serial murder communication. He is also gratified to have been invited to deliver testimony before the Consumer Product Safety Commission on the subject of product recalls, and being asked by the USDA to conduct a national study of product recalls.

In accounting for his success, Dr. Gibson credits the influence of his family, debate coaches, and early teachers, all of whom helped lay the foundation upon which he now stands. He also draws great strength from his deep and abiding religious faith, and from the support and encouragement of his friends. Looking toward the future, Dr. Gibson aspires to serve as an advocate for prison reform and shine a light on the need for greater funding, improved facilities, and inmate rights.
