Leveraging more than five decades of excellence in journalism, Mr. Cox has earned distinction as a writer and historian. For several years, he has worked independently, focusing his efforts on exploring the rich history of Texas and the Wild West. He has written more than 40 nonfiction books, including the two-volume set "Time of the Rangers: Texas Rangers: From 1900 to the Present" utilizing his unique access to records about the Texas Rangers and "The Texas Rangers: Wearing the Cinco Peso" about the world-renowned state law enforcement agency in the 19th century.

Cox began his career working for the San Angelo Standard-Times in 1967. He then worked with the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal and Austin American-Statesman before becoming the chief of media relations for the Texas Department of Public Safety in 1985. He later handled media relations for the Texas Department of Transportation before closing out his career with the state as news team leader for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. He retired in 2015 to write full time. Among his professional accomplishments, he is proud to have been elected to the Texas Institute of Letters in 1993.
