Drawing on over four decades of expertise, Mr. Hazelett specialized in local government and public service leadership. Since 1992 and until his retirement in 2013, he built a prolific career as the Henrico County manager in Virginia. In this capacity, Mr. Hazelett was responsible for appointing all department heads and directly overseeing department of personnel, county, attorney, office of public information, police and fire departments, and providing mentorship services to young public service leaders.
Mr. Hazelett initially began his career in 1972 as Henrico County's first traffic engineer. He subsequently contributed to the Department of Public Works serving as the assistant director and director, before advancing to the post of a deputy county manager of community development in 1989. Following this period, Mr. Hazelett worked as the chief of staff and a deputy county manager of finance and administration prior to his top leadership role as the county manager of Henrico County.
Before he embarked on his professional journey, Mr. Hazelett pursued an education at the West Virginia Institute of Technology, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 1967. He continued his academic efforts at West Virginia University, earning a master's degree in civil engineering in 1968. As a commitment to his field, he has been registered as a professional engineer in the states of Virginia and North Carolina. Additionally, Mr. Hazelett was active with several industry-related organizations, including the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Public Works Association, International City/County Managers Association, the Henrico Business Club and the local chapter of Rotary International.

Likewise, he developed management succession programs, roadways and highway extensions, installed the first traffic progression system and established an official mailing address for Henrico, Virginia, which saved the county at least $5 million dollars in annual tax revenues. Reflecting on a long career, he attributes much of his success to his commitment and dedication to all his endeavors. Looking toward the future, Mr. Hazelett aspires to continue mentoring the next generation of public service leaders for as long as possible.
