Developing a passion for chemical engineering in high school, Dr. Paul began his career as a chemical engineering researcher at E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Company while studying at North Carolina State University, from which he obtained a Bachelor of Science in 1961. He concluded his academic efforts at the University of Wisconsin, earning a Master of Arts in 1963 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1965 before becoming an instructor in the chemical engineering department from 1963 to 1965. After a brief term as a chemical engineering researcher with the Chemstrand Research Center from 1965 to 1967, Dr. Paul accepted a position with the University of Texas at Austin, where he remains active to this day.
Embarking on his tenure with the University of Texas at Austin as an assistant professor of chemical engineering in 1967, Dr. Paul advanced to become an associate professor in 1970 and a professor in 1973. He further provided his expertise to the aforementioned university as the chair of the chemical engineering department from 1977 to 1985 and the T. Brockett Hudson professor from 1978 to 1985. He additionally worked as the director of the Center for Polymer Research beginning in 1981 and as the regents chair of chemical engineering beginning in 1985. Previously serving as the director of the Texas Materials Institute from 1998 to 2008, he currently excels as a professor and the Ernest Cockrell Sr. Chair of Engineering, roles he has held since 2001. Presently, Dr. Paul has no intentions on slowing down in his career, even after more than 50 years in the field.
Alongside his primary responsibilities, Dr. Paul is a well-regarded author in his areas of expertise. Initially publishing "Controlled Release Polymeric Formulations" in 1976, he later co-authored the first volume of "Polymer Blends" in 1978 and the second volume, "Polymer Blends: Formulation and Performance," in 2000. He additionally co-authored "Polymeric Gas Separation Membranes" in 1994. In order to remain aware of developments in his field, he maintains his professional affiliation with such organizations as the Society of Plastics Engineers, the National Academy of Engineering, the Mexico Academy of Sciences, the American Chemical Society, the National Materials Advisory Board and the Fiber Society. A member of several honor societies, Dr. Paul has been notably elected as a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the North American Membrane Society.
As a testament to his excellence throughout his career, Dr. Paul has accrued a number of honors and accolades. In 2005, he was presented with the Founders Award and the Alan S. Michaels Award from the North American Membrane Society. He was also celebrated with a Distinguished Service Citation from the University of Wisconsin and was nominated as the Donald L. Katz lecturer at the University of Michigan in 2000. Over the years, Dr. Paul has been recognized by the American Chemical Society, including with the E.V. Murphree Award in industrial and engineering chemistry, the Phillips Award in applied polymer science and the Doolittle Award, and by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers with the William H. Walker Award, the Materials Engineering and Sciences Division Award and the Best Fundamental Paper Award.
Additional awards to Dr. Paul's name include the Malcolm E. Pruitt Award from the Council for Chemical Research, the Hocott Engineering Research Award, the Distinguished Engineering Alumnus Award from North Carolina State University and the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award from the University of Texas at Austin. In addition, he is the two-time recipient of the International Education Award and a three-time recipient of the University of Texas Student Engineering Council Award. His skills in teaching and research have also been lauded with the Outstanding Achievement in Research Award from the Society of Plastics Engineers, the Joe J. King Professional Engineering Achievement Award, the Engineering Award from the Teaching General Dynamics Corporation, the Engineering News-Record Award, and the Educational Service Award from the Plastics Institute of America.
