Dr. Villarreal brings an exceptional record of experience to his current role after serving admirably in various appointments. For example, between 2011 and 2022, he enjoyed productive interaction with patients as a physician in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center, where he was also a valued faculty member teaching at the rank of associate professor. Dr. Villarreal earned additional critical experience in the field as the chair of the Pain Medicine Department at Gundersen Lutheran from 2007 to 2011, and from 2004 to 2007, he served at Marshfield Clinic as the chair of the Pain Medicine Department.
Inspired by a family member to pursue a career in medicine, Dr. Villarreal earned an MD at the University of Panama in 1990. In 1994, the University of Miami recognized him as a fellow in the immunology program, after which he accepted an internship in internal medicine at Metropolitan Hospital, an institution affiliated with New York Medical College. He was then honored to join Temple University Hospital to complete a residency in anesthesiology before beginning his tenure in the fellowship program in pain management at Thomas Jefferson University. Eager to earn additional proficiencies related to administrative roles, Dr. Villarreal also pursued a Master of Business Administration in health care from the Opus College of Business at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota, which he completed in 2008.
Dr. Villarreal's outstanding career milestones include being named the chief resident at Temple University Hospital and being honored with the Physician Recognition Award from the American Medical Association for three consecutive years. He attributes his success thus far to distinct attributes such as patience, perseverance and dedication, and he remains current in emerging treatments and protocols through sustained membership in the International Association for the Study of Pain.
