/24-7PressRelease/ - KANSAS CITY, MO, July 28, 2006 - A College Safety Supply Checklist is available for parents at http://www.safetyandsecuritysource.com. College-aged people are more likely to be victims of burglary than any other group. College students typically own more expensive consumer goods and electronics than most people. This is a well-known fact and criminals pay attention. Students should keep valuables under lock and key and out of sight.
Parents and students are often concerned about violent attacks by strangers. Parents teach their kids to be afraid of strangers, however, most crimes are committed by those that are known, whether very well or in passing. This is particularly true of sexual assault. Attacks are rarely committed by strangers. Students should not let their guards down around anyone.
1. Lock your doors. Most campus crime is about opportunity. If a dorm or apartment door is unlocked, students and their valuables are a perfect target. If valuables are left laying around the dorm room, on the desk in classrooms, at the library, you are more vulnerable and likely to be victimized. Those who have been in your room or apartment can often be tied many thefts. Lock up everything of value and trust no one.
2. Students should drink responsibly or not at all. Alcohol plays a big part of crimes committed against college students. Don't drink if you are underage and drink responsibility if you are of age. Most sexual assaults comitted on victims between the ages of 17 and 24 involve the use of alcohol—usually excessively by at least one or both of the parties—as well as drug use. Your inhibitions are down and you are likely to be victimized.
3. Keep personal information off of social websites. Beware of the pictures and the types of poses that you post on your account. Do not put your home phone number and your address in your profile. Do not give out your schedule by discussing your hangout places. It is ammunition for stalkers. Don't get too comfortable about the privacy of your profile information, criminals can always get around rules and safety measures.
4. Students should never walk around alone, especially at night. Students should always travel around campus with a friend or request a security escort. Students should tell someone where they are at all times. They should check in with friends when coming or going, this way they are expected and will be missed if they don't show up. If students chose to carry a personal safety device; pepper spray or personal alarm, they should make sure it is accessible. Carrying your protection in a book bag or purse will not help when confronted by a would-be perpetrator. paying attention to your surroundings will help you avoid getting surprised and your protection taken from you and used against you.
5. Most importantly- Trust your instincts and be aware of your surroundings. We have a built-in survival mechanism that tells us when something is wrong, however, we often ignore it in the interest of being polite. It is hardly ever wrong. Get out of the situation immediately.
Pay attention when you are walking and always know what is going on around you. Do not talk on a cell phone or have ear plugs in your ears when you should be paying attention to your surroundings and making sure you don't look like like an easy, unwitting victim.
If you carry a personal safety device, carry the right product. 100% pepper spray (OC) is recommended over tear gas (CS and CN) or combination products. Pepper spray is natural and causes the eyes to burn, water and close as well as serious coughing. The effects are temporary and wear off after 30-40 minutes. Personal alarms should be loud and easy to use. Book safes and can safes are good for hiding valuables; including cash or jewelry in the dorm room or apartment. All safety products should be acessible.
