After earning a diploma in the Bryn Mawr Hospital's School of Nursing in the early 1960s, she commenced her career as an instructor of nursing courses at York County Vocational-Technical School, Hamot Medical School and Pennsylvania State University in their Behrend College's associate degree in nursing program. Shortly thereafter, Ms. Steckler served the Veterans Affairs Medical Center for several years, including as the assistant director of the Cooperative Health Education Center (Lake Area Health Education), chair of the medical ethics team and educational specialist for the Employee Education Systems. Between 2006 and 2010, she was an instructional system specialist.
