Mr. Akerlow is a land and property development executive celebrating more than 50 years of excellence in his field. A graduate of the University of Utah, he holds both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in political science and philosophy, and completed coursework at the University of Utah College of Law. Before beginning his career in development, Mr. Akerlow served proudly to the rank of captain in the United States Army, implementing the first civic action program in Vietnam and operating a specialized intelligence program as a part of the 41st Civil Affairs Company. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his military service, among other honors.
Mr. Akerlow developed his knowledge of real estate and development as an associate of Ivory and Company, where he helped plan and develop large projects including an industrial park and Salt Lake City's Brickyard commercial and office complex. Early in his career, he served as director of the Salt Lake Model Cities Program, a $3 million program administered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development that oversaw neighborhood redevelopment, low-income housing, and the first community organizing project undertaken by the state of Utah, among other initiatives. In 1992, Mr. Akerlow took his development expertise to the private sector as the president and chief executive officer of Proterra Development, Inc., where he remains managing director of the company. Proterra Development, Inc. has developed holdings valued at more than $2.2 billion, including commercial, industrial, and mixed-use properties. In addition to his work with Proterra Development, Inc., Mr. Akerlow is presently the managing director of Zenith Development LLC since 2017, where he and his partner have developed two mixed office-retail projects and a large mixed residential use property, with plans for a second and an expansion into luxury residential construction.
Outside his work in development, Mr. Akerlow has been a faculty member and instructor at the University of Utah and American University and has taught continuing education classes for the Utah Board of Realtors. He is dedicated to philanthropy and has held board-level leadership positions with the Utah Arthritis Foundation, the Utah chapter of the American Heart Association, the Utah Symphony, and the United Nations Association of Utah, among others. Mr. Akerlow is a former member of the Republican National Committee and is active in the Utah Republican Party, serving as two-term chair, a Utah state Presidential elector in 1984 and 1988, and a three-time delegate to the Republican National Convention.
Mr. Akerlow credits his success to the values that he has learned from his faith and to the strong foundation that his education provided him. He is proud to have been married for more than 60 years and looks forward to serving his family as he begins to wind down his career.
