SOUTH SALEM, NY, June 30, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- We are delighted to announce that Karen Nussbaumer, a highly esteemed figure in the realm of ultrasound research and education, has been honored with inclusion in the esteemed Marquis Who's Who Biographical Registry. This prestigious recognition serves as a testament to Ms. Nussbaumer's extraordinary achievements in the field and her unwavering commitment to democratizing ultrasound education.

With an unwavering vision of making ultrasound technology and education accessible to anyone, anywhere, Ms. Nussbaumer is empowering individuals by equipping them with invaluable skills and knowledge in this transformative medical field. Her awe-inspiring journey commenced during her tenure as a lead vascular technologist at Mobile Infirmary Medical Center, where she faced the challenges of hiring qualified diagnostic medical sonographers and vascular technologists. Recognizing the scarcity of professionals in the field, she fearlessly embarked on a pioneering path, making the groundbreaking decision to establish the first specialized ultrasound school in the United States.

Ms. Nussbaumer's tenure as the Technical Manager of Ultrasound at Massachusetts General Hospital further solidified her commitment to advancing the field. Inspired by her father's near-aneurysm rupture, she conducted original research that led to the development of the Nussbaumer Aneurysm Dilation Ratio (NADR). This innovative method provides a more comprehensive assessment of abdominal aortic aneurysm dilation by taking into account the diameter of the native, uninvolved aorta in addition to the aneurysm diameter. The NADR calibrates the relative amount of dilation of the aorta in the form of a ratio, recognizing that the native aorta size varies among individuals. This approach goes beyond the traditional measurement of aneurysm diameter alone, which does not provide sufficient information about the risk of aneurysmal rupture. The NADR has been published in prestigious Harvard Medical Journals and played a crucial role in her father's successful aneurysm repair. Notably, the NADR has shed light on the higher rate of aneurysm rupture in women compared to men, suggesting that the smaller size of their normal, native aorta contributes to the increased risk.

Inspired by her father, Dr. Fridtjof Nussbaumer, an esteemed orthopedic surgeon with over 30 years of experience, Ms. Nussbaumer founded the Gulf Coast Institute of Vascular Ultrasound in 1998. Guided by her father's unwavering belief in her potential to revolutionize the field, she undertook transformative research and educational initiatives, leading to remarkable advancements in ultrasound technology.

Ms. Nussbaumer's exceptional career trajectory propelled her to become a distinguished Harvard Global Healthcare Leader, participating in a prestigious program that honors individuals who have made significant contributions to healthcare. Through this program, she has garnered recognition for her expertise and groundbreaking research. Notably, she is celebrated for her innovative fat embolism clinical scoring chart, a method that revolutionizes the diagnosis and treatment of trauma patients. This chart enables more accurate and rapid identification of Fat Embolism versus Deep Vein Thrombosis in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) cases.

In addition to her notable contributions to ultrasound and aneurysm research, Ms. Nussbaumer is the visionary founder of the Center for Ultrasound Research and Education (CURE), an esteemed institution dedicated to advancing ultrasound education and research. CURE's state-of-the-art ultrasound schools are licensed, accredited, and Title IV-funded, underscoring the institution's commitment to providing cutting-edge ultrasound education.

Ms. Nussbaumer's exceptional dedication to patient safety is another testament to her remarkable achievements. As the driving force behind the initiation of the Diagnostic Ionizing Radiation Exposure (DIRE) Act, she has played a pivotal role in advocating for legislation that enhances patient protection and ensures the appropriate use of diagnostic radiation. Recognizing the potential risks associated with ionizing radiation in medical imaging, her tireless efforts have significantly heightened awareness about the importance of minimizing unnecessary radiation exposure while upholding high-quality healthcare standards.

Ms. Nussbaumer passionately emphasizes the importance of granting individuals, regardless of gender or age, the autonomy to make decisions about their own bodies. By harnessing the power of knowledge through ultrasound technology, we can gain insights into our bodies' inner workings without the need for invasive procedures or the potential risks associated with CT radiation. In collaboration with the University of California San Diego, an initiative has been launched to promote the Nussbaumer Method. This program aims to provide master-level training to doctors, enabling them to utilize ultrasound techniques developed by Karen Nussbaumer and obtain diagnoses in less than 30 seconds.
