    CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH, July 11, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Jonathan Karn, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Dr. Karn is renowned for his work as a molecular biologist, professor, and chair of the department of Molecular Biology and Microbiology at the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine. For more than 20 years, he has been overseeing the department, teaching students coursework, and conducting extensive research as the director of the Case Center for AIDS Research. As a research scientist, Dr. Karn has focused primarily on viruses, particularly human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV). He also studies Hepatitis B and other infectious diseases.

As part of his effort to find a cure for HIV, Dr. Karn has been working to eliminate the cells that carry virus which rebounds when the antiviral drugs are removed by directed cell killing. Moreover, Dr. Karn has been trying to better understand the differences the virus has on women versus men and how the transcription of the virus is regulated.

Prior to moving to CWRU, Dr. Karn notably spent more than 25 years as a scientific staff member at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK (1976 to 2002). He also had the opportunity to serve as a sabbatical visitor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies between 1983 and 1984.

As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Karn has also been involved in various other studies, including being part of a team that constructed the first genome libraries for nematodes during the 1980s. He has published over 235 scholar papers and served as the Executive Editor for the Journal of Molecular Biology from 1989 to 2011.

Dr. Karn earned a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from the prestigious Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1972 and a Doctor of Philosophy in cell biology from The Rockefeller University in New York City in 1976. In recognition of his leadership in microbiology, he was elected a fellow of the American Society for Microbiology in 2011.

In light of his professional achievements, Dr. Karn received an Outstanding Scientific Award in Translational Medicine from Drexel University College of Medicine in 2016. He was also named as a Distinguished University Professor by Case Western Reserve University in 2022.
