Mr. Beatty graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a Bachelor of Science in business and managerial economics. He then studied at the University of Bridgeport, earning his MBA, magna cum laude, in finance and operations research. He is a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, and selected to the Pi Delta Epsilon Journalism Honorary.
Notably, at Carnegie, he had the opportunity to work for Dr. Allan Meltzer, one of the world's leading economists. Dr. Meltzer showed him the IBM room and said he should learn something about computers. He said "You should learn something about these computers. They will become useful someday." Mr. Beatty took the first computer class offered at the university, which led to his storied career. Carnegie Mellon University is now esteemed as a world leader in the field.
While at Carnegie, Mr. Beatty proposed Carnegie have a mascot. Carnegie never previously had a mascot. The school approved his suggestion of a Scottish Terrier as an appropriate symbol of Carnegie and Mr. Beatty became Scottie, the first school mascot. In 2007 Mr. Beatty and the University President, Dr. Jared Cohon jointly announced that Carnegie Mellon University had adopted the Scottie as its official school symbol.
For more than 12 years, Mr. Beatty has represented his company, Peregrine LLC. As a skilled and system architect and project manager, he plans, designs, and launches new systems. He also researches long-range future developments in his field. A second business line provides tax advice and preparation. Mr. Beatty is also a tax professional enrolled agent, certified by the IRS.
Previously, Mr. Beatty enjoyed a long and successful career in information technology (IT). For example, as an IT Supervisor and Corporate Systems Architect for Champion International he designed and installed a $6 billion Accounts Payable system. As the director of IT and signal processing at Cincinnati Electronics he successfully merged five independent computer departments into one. This provided increased productivity, reduced expenses, and better management thereby allowing for better management of the company's information technology.
AS IT manager of the Cincinnati United Way, he and acquired and trained the staff on 21 personal computers. Before that they had none. He was responsible for the departments of Data Processing, Word Processing, Telephones, Audiovisuals, Printing, and processing all information for 117 social service agencies.
Working at CompuServe, he managed the presentation of stocks and other investments using the first search engine ever developed. Mr. Beatty and his team created a system which enabled customers interested in investments to move from one screen to another with only one or two keystrokes. He designed and installed a $1½ billion logistics system for the Air Force to track the inventory of an Air Force logistics center. Later he managed a new $4 billion payroll system for teachers, principals and other educational employees of Ohio's Department of Education.
At Armco, he proposed then managed the installation of one of the early electronic mail and voice mail systems. Armco was having financial difficulties at the. Nevertheless, Mr. Beatty persuaded to Board of Directors to spend $300,000 to have Mr. Beatty install these two systems. A second project he did for Armco was planning a corporate aviation system. While designing this project, he had the opportunity to work with Neil Armstrong.
The most well-known project Mr. Beatty helped create was as systems architect of NASDAQ. He designed the on-line system which presents stock quotes to the public, Index, the NASDAQ database, the NASDAQ Index and a monitoring system for the SEC and the NASD. Highlighting these contributions, Mr. Beatty was featured in Newsweek magazine and was a guest on The Phil Donahue Show and was interviewed by Barry Mitchell on national ABC News.
He is a Certified Project Management Professional, Systems Management Professional, and Data Processing Professional. He also is an IRS-Certified Tax Professional. At CompuServe he was recognized three times as Employee of the Quarter and twice received top performer awards from H&R Block.
He has authored many articles to technical and other professional publications. He was a columnist for Adventure Gaming magazine and Great Scot magazine. He was an editor for Que Publications and was published twice in Reader's Digest. He was Editor of Mensa World which required translating to English 18 national news magazines published in their own language. As an actor he played the male lead in an hour-long movie for H&R Block which was viewed by H&R Block employees around the world. Clips from this movie were used on national advertisements for H&R Block for several years.
In 1968, he authored a paper describing a world-wide communication system which closely describes today's Internet. He spoke at the International Forum on Intelligence in Singapore in 2001 discussing "The future of technology 25 years from now." Many of the topics presented are now in use today.
He is currently working on developing a paper on "The Sociometric Effects of New Technology in 2050." It incorporates the rapid development of Quantum Computing, moving data at incredible speed using optical transmission, placing tiny chips internally on people that will effectively allow people to effectively include a new form of the internet as a functioning part of the body. These all are currently being used now and new development is being done on them now. In 27 years they will have reached a maturity stage and be accepted by most.
Mr. Beatty has been active in government and political campaigns. He had the honor to introduce a major candidate for President of the United States to a crowd of 3,000, televised by all the networks. The candidate became President. He was later selected as one of 100 men and women to be in the Honor Guard of a Republican national convention. In his lifetime he has worked media for 2 presidents and been invited to be in the presence of others. Mr. Beatty was elected President of the Ohio Senate of the Ohio Model Legislature. As Senate President he initiated the process of Ohio passing the right-turn-on-red law.
Mr. Beatty served as National Chairman of American Mensa. He started American Mensa's and International Mensa's Community Service program to encourage Mensans to utilize their experience and intelligence to help their local communities. Mr. Beatty has been active with the Boy Scouts at the local, district, national and international levels. Collaborating with scouts from Perth, Australia, he helped create the Boy Scouts International Cyberspace Jamboree and was awarded a Life Membership with the Simon Kenton Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
He is a founding member of his Masonic lodge. He served as the local president of Jaycees and State Chairman of Leadership Training. In these roles he was awarded the Outstanding Local President of Pennsylvania and Outstanding State Chairman in the United States. He is a member of Quest, an organization of business, academic and civic leaders of Fort Wayne and an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Fort Wayne. He is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. Mr. Beatty is the 7th generation to own the land and home granted to his ancestor, a Colonel who commanded a battalion in the Revolutionary War. The home was built in 1800 and has been used continuously by a descendant of the Colonel for 223 years. The home is on the Allegheny River where Mr. Beatty enjoyed his favorite sport water-skiing. He could ski at 70 mph on a slalom ski.
Mr. Beatty served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. Between active duty and the reserves, he served our country for eight years. He is still active with the American Legion.
The achievement Mr. Beatty is most proud of is the recognition by the Ohio House of Representatives as a Distinguished Citizen of Ohio. They unanimously voted to pass a House Resolution for his many years of meritorious service in both his professional and civic career.
