Dr. Guth enjoyed a long and distinguished career in education that spanned more than 45 years. Concluding her classroom time in 2023, she was a professor and reading specialist at the University of Mary Washington and a professor of literary education at George Mason University. Dr. Guth also found success as a partner at K-12 Literacy Partners, through which she provided customized professional development for schools and school districts, and as an executive consultant at Renaissance Learning.
Nancy Guth started her career as a third grade teacher at Pan American Christian Academy in 1972-1973. After a wonderful year, she moved to the International School in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where she taught literacy for 1½ years, in the K-3rd area.
She then returned home in 1975, now with an adopted Brazilian baby, and started teaching for Zuni Public Schools, New Mexico, as a reading specialist, then for Gallup McKinley County Schools from 1981 to 1988.
Dr. Guth spent more than four decades in public school education, beginning as a reading specialist at Gallup McKinley County Schools in Gallup, New Mexico, from 1981 to 1988 and Prince William County Schools in Woodbridge, Virginia, between 1988 and 1991. Additionally, she supervised literacy, humanities, and English language learners for the Stafford County Public Schools in Stafford, Virginia, from 1991 to 2014, overseeing all English and literacy instruction for grades K-12 and all social studies and history programs. During her tenure in Stafford, Dr. Guth supported the literary programs for nearly 30,000 students.
A published writer, Dr. Guth co-authored "Children's Literature in an Integrated Curriculum: The Authentic Voice" in 2003 with Bette Bosma, "Leading a Successful Reading Program: Administrators and Reading Specialists Working Together to Make It Happen" in 2005 with Stephanie Stephens Pettengill, and by "Literacy Coaching to Build Adolescent Learning: 5 Pillars of Practice" in 2010 with Tamie Pratt-Fartro.
Dr. Guth graduated from Calvin University in 1972 with a Bachelor of Education in English. She also earned a Doctor of Philosophy in literacy multicultural education from George Mason University in 2001. Well-qualified in her field, Dr. Guth received credentials as a reading specialist.
To remain abreast of changes in the field, Dr. Guth has been affiliated with the International Reading Association and the Association of College Professors.
Dr. Guth's tenure in education has been supported through the ongoing encouragement of her family, particularly her husband, who was extra helpful while she was pursuing her doctorate. Grateful for her success, she believes her passion for literacy allowed her to accomplish as much as she did.
