Mr. Nilsen initially began his career serving in the United States Navy in a variety of roles, including a deputy, an executive officer, a commanding officer of an AEGIS destroyer and cruiser, an assistant chief of staff of operations and training, and the chief of staff of a commander carrier strike group two.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Mr. Nilsen pursued an education at Southern Illinois University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in education in 2001. He continued his academic efforts at Troy University in Montgomery, earning a Master of Science in management in 2007. As a commitment to his field, he has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the Surface Navy Association and the Military Officers Association of America. Likewise dedicated to civic advocacy, Mr. Nilsen contributes to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, The Fold of Honor Foundation, and Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society.
Well-regarded for his contributions to the field, Mr. Nilsen has received multiple awards, including multiple Battle Efficiency Awards, Instructor of the Year for the East Coast Award and the Sailor of the Year award. Among his professional accomplishments, he is most proud of mentoring the young men and women in the United States Navy, who went on to command their own ships and carrier strike groups. Reflecting on his career, he attributes much of his success to his parents and the support of his wife. Looking toward the future, Mr. Nilsen aspires to successfully retire and travel with his wife, while guiding and supporting his children and grandchildren.
