Susan Leach Snyder Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Ms. Susan Leach Snyder has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in science education



Ms. Snyder has been recognized by several national geology and oceanography groups throughout her career.

    HEBRON, OH, July 20, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Susan Leach Snyder with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Ms. Snyder celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. Now retired, Ms. Snyder was a science teacher who taught in the public school system for over 27 years. Having briefly taught general and health science at Columbus Public Schools in Ohio for two years, she subsequently spent the remainder of her career teaching life, earth, and physical science at Upper Arlington Schools in Ohio. Among a range of responsibilities, Ms. Snyder focused on creating fun and unique activities for her students that were engaging, age appropriate, relevant, and often involving community partnerships. She presented workshops about these activities at local, state, and national science teacher conferences.

A well-written author, Ms. Snyder has contributed numerous articles in scientific journals and other publications. From 1987 until 1995, she was a co-author, writing earth science textbooks for Merrill Publishing. After that and until 2008 she was a co-author and team author for Glencoe and Glencoe/McGraw Hills science books. Ms. Snyder's book titles include Focus on Earth Science, Merrill Earth Science, Glencoe Earth Science, The Changing Surface of Earth, The Air Around Us, The Water Planet, Science Interactions, Science Voyages, and Glencoe Science Series with special editions for Florida, California, North Carolina, Alabama, Texas, Indiana, New York, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Georgia. and Kentucky. In 1977, 1990, and 1992, she self-published The Ocean Environment for her eighth grade students. She also self-published her wildlife photography in books titled, Incredible Insect Designs in 2009 and Waterbirds of Florida in 2010.

As a member of her community, Ms. Snyder spent her earlier years as the president of the Consortium of Aquatic and Marine Educators in Ohio. She also served as a trustee for the North America Astrophysical Observatory. She has remained active as a science volunteer at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida in Naples, Florida, since her retirement in 2000. Ms. Snyder is also involved with several local committees to help preserve the environment within her community and maintains her own website, which is dedicated to science, wildlife photography, family genealogy, and her work at the Conservancy.

Ms. Snyder graduated from Miami University in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science degree in comprehensive science education. She subsequently earned a Master of Science degree in entomology from the University of Hawaii in 1970. Ms. Snyder also received teaching certification in Ohio for grades 7-12 and credentials as a Florida master naturalist.

To remain aware of developments in her field, Ms. Snyder was active in various roles as a member of the National Marine Educators Association, including as the historical committee chair, board member, and conference workshop presenter. She has also been a member, in various capacities of the Science Education Council of Ohio and the National Science Teaching Association.

Proud of her accomplishments in education, Ms. Snyder has been recognized by several national geology and oceanography groups throughout her career, including the National Association of Geology Teachers as an Outstanding Earth Science Teacher in Ohio in 1983, the National Marine Education Association with the Outstanding Teacher Award in 1984, and the Geological Society of America with an Outstanding Teacher Award in 1992. She was also recognized by the Ohio State Department of Education as the Ohio Teacher of the Year in 1987, by the National Education Association as one of four finalists for National Teacher of the Year in 1987, and by the National Science Teachers Association with a President Award for Excellence in Science and Math Teaching in 1992. Ms. Snyder was honored by the Conservancy of Southwest Florida as the Volunteer of the year in 2018. She has contributed more than 12,000 service hours to the Conservancy over the past two decades.
