Dr. Marcy was recognized with the Riester-Davis Lifetime Achievement in Food Packaging Award from the Institute of Food Technologists.

An accomplished educator with years of professional experience to his credit, Dr. Marcy presently serves as a professor for the Food Science and Technology Department at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He was department head from 2008 to 2020. Through the University, he conducts research in food preservation and packaging with funding competitive national and international sources. Likewise, he provides FDA and USDA training through the eponymously-named Marcy Associates, Inc. Over the years, Dr. Marcy gained valuable expertise in education as the interim head of the Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise Department and as an assistant professor in the University of Florida's Food Science and Human Nutrition Department.
During the early stages of his career, Dr. Marcy gained valuable expertise in the field as a business development manager and a senior food technologist with Rampart Packaging, Inc. Before embarking on his professional journey, he earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in food technology and science from the University of Tennessee in 1974 and 1976 respectively. Subsequently, Dr. Marcy expanded upon his professional knowledge, earning a PhD in food science from North Carolina State University.
Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, Dr. Marcy aligns himself with the Institute of Thermal Processing Specialists, the Institute of Packaging Professionals, and the Institute of Food Technologists. Due to his professional achievements, he has become a member of several honors societies, including the Sigma Xi Scientific Honor Society, the Alpha Zeta Honorary Fraternity, and the Gamma Sigma Delta Agricultural Honor Society and received an Outstanding Faculty award from Virginia Tech and a Certificate of Teaching Excellence through the University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. More recently, Dr. Marcy was recognized with the Riester-Davis Lifetime Achievement in Food Packaging Award from the Institute of Food Technologists, the Italian Packaging Technology Award, the Virginia Tech International Faculty Development Award, and the Chairman's Award from the Research and Development Associates for Military Food and Packaging. Dr. Marcy was awarded the Human Research Mission Badge by Dr. John Charles, Chief of the International Science Office of NASA's Human Research Program for his years of contributions to the NASA Habitat Working Group.
While his career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Marcy takes the most pride in serving as a department head and professor; both roles have allowed him to make a positive impact on fellow faculty and students. The Virginia Tech Food Science and Technology Department was recently rated by a prominent education magazine in the Top 10 USA Food Science programs based on the national and international accomplishments of their faculty and graduates. The cornerstone of his success lay in being responsible from a young age and having wonderful parents as role models. Looking ahead, Dr. Marcy intends to step away from his role and continue working for his consulting company, Marcy Associates.
