Additionally, since 2019, Dr. Iqbal has also found success as an executive clinical development and medical affairs consultant where he provides strategic decision support and end-to end scientific furtherance to small cap biopharma companies and health care think tanks on value based drug development.
Leveraging his more than 15 years of experience in research and development, global medical affairs, and other areas of the industry, Dr. Iqbal served as Senior Medical Affairs leader of neuroscience and global medical affairs at AstraZeneca, and Head of oncology global evidence and value development at Sanofi. Before joining the industry in 2008, Dr. Iqbal was a research fellow at the Boston University Center for Assessment of Pharmaceutical Practices where he advanced his academic training in health economics & outcomes research, and in his position lead multidisciplinary research with biopharmaceuticals, Veterans Affairs (VA), Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services (CMS), and Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ).
Extremely passionate about his profession, Dr. Iqbal relishes bringing new and effective drugs for rare diseases and disorders of high unmet need to the market. Looking toward the future of biopharmaceuticals, and leveraging his multidisciplinary experience, he aims to continue advancing technology and combining new disciplines like medical value, BIG DATA and AI to advance development of targeted, effective drugs in areas of high unmet need. Striving for better health care access and optimal patient outcomes, Dr. Iqbal also relies on the support and encouragement of his wife Dr. Saira Nisar, a practicing physician who is the medical director of multiple post-acute care facilities and spearheads numerous strategic initiatives to advance patient care in Massachusetts.
One of Dr. Iqbal's most pioneering works while working at AstraZeneca included leading the development and operationalization of an early research and development pipeline engagement model, which won the Hippocratic Award for connecting AZ's science to medical practice. Throughout his career, he has also become a recognized international expert in medical affairs, health economics and real-world evidence research, much of which has been cited hundreds of times, along with his health care policy work with different think tanks. Dr. Iqbal has disseminated much of his studies by authoring several dozen scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Therapeutic Innovation & Regulatory Science, European Journal of Hematology and the Journal of Medical Economics.
Dr. Iqbal gives back to his community as a former alumni leadership council member at his alma mater, Boston University, in the school of public health. In his current capacity, as member of the Dean's advisory board, he facilitates strategic direction to the school's initiatives and contributes to school's mission of advancing excellence and innovation in research, education, and service nationally and globally. Dr. Iqbal has also been an advisory board member for the Humanity Talent Network (HTN) since 2022. A Deerfield Management & Jumpststart Nova funded private network of underrepresented leaders in health care & Life Sciences, HTN provides resources, opportunities, and access to members in pursuit of their career goals and executive transition to senior leadership roles. The overall goal of HTN is to diversify c-suite and board representation to drive innovation and equity across the healthcare landscape.
Following in the footsteps of his parents, who are both physicians, Dr. Iqbal earned a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S) at Allama Iqbal Medical College at Punjab University in Pakistan in 1999. He subsequently received a Master of Public Health (MPH) in 2003 and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 2007 at Boston University. Dr. Iqbal also received credentials as a certified coach practitioner.
