Mr. Hutt earned a bachelor's degree from Yale University, a Bachelor of Laws from Harvard Law School, and a Master of Laws in Food and Drug Law from New York University Law School. He has served on numerous Boards of Directors and advisory committees, and is the only member of the National Academy of Medicine who was elected because of his legal work in the private practice of law. While serving as FDA Chief Counsel, he transformed FDA from reliance on enforcement in the courts to the creative use of rulemaking to implement FDA policy. For this, he has been called the Father of Modern Food and Drug Law and the Dean of the Food and Drug Bar.
For his outstanding body of work, he twice received FDA's highest award, a Distinguished Service Award from the Department of Health, and the Underwood Prescott Award from MIT. More recently, he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from FDA, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Foundation for Biomedical Research, and has been named a Leading Food and Drug Lawyer.
