Dr. Schwarz is a respected physician and researcher in Illinois who specializes as a board-certified general, child, and adult psychiatrist, treating patients with post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. He also serves as a senior psychiatric forensic expert as the owner of his practice, Eitan D. Schwarz, MD, DLFAPA, FAACAP, since 1970.
During his distinguished tenure in psychiatry, Dr. Schwarz pioneered early seminal studies in childhood PTSD following a tragic local school shooting in 1988. This work led to his later work as a clinician and forensic expert in psychological trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder. He also studied the interface between technology and mental health, earning several US patents as the founder and chief executive officer of MyDigitalFamily Ltd. in Chicago. He also published a pioneering parent guide for managing home electronic media and spoke widely about using electronic media to benefit child development and family life. He was a telepsychiatrist from 2016 to 2017, providing his services remotely to patients. Among other roles, Dr. Schwarz was also a volunteer, consultant and teacher at numerous local agencies and universities, and the head of the child and pediatric psychiatry divisions at Evanston Hospital – Northshore University in Evanston, Illinois, where he was also a senior attending physician.
Besides his fieldwork, Dr. Schwarz spent many years in the classroom as a clinical assistant professor at the University of Chicago from 1976 to 1983 and at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago between 1988 and 2005.
Civically, Dr. Schwarz has worked in local clinics and consulted to schools, agencies, and courts. He lent his expertise as a volunteer consultant to The Ark in Chicago since 2000. Founded in 1971, the nonprofit Jewish social services organization provides various services to community members, including employment, mental health, general medical and dental care, and financial and counseling assistance.
Dr. Schwarz prepared for his career in mental health by achieving a Bachelor of Arts from Cornell University in 1965 and a Doctor of Medicine from Johns Hopkins University in 1969. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include an internship at Boston City Hospital, residency in psychiatry and fellowship in child psychiatry at the University of Chicago, and a second fellowship in child psychiatry at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago. Dr. Schwarz received board certifications through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Remaining aware of developments in his field, Dr. Schwarz was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and a distinguished life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
