Nathan Toohey, PhD, PE, Recognized by Marquis Who's Who

Nathan Toohey serves as an expert in geotechnical engineering for mine tailing storage facilities

Dr. Toohey is licensed as a professional engineer in the states of Wyoming and Colorado, as well as in Saskatchewan, Canada.

DENVER, CO, August 01, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Nathan Toohey, PhD, PE, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Nathan has 20 years of consulting and research experience in geotechnical engineering, geomechanics, poromechanics, and geophysics. Drawing on two decades of expertise, Dr. Toohey currently specializes in geotechnical engineering for mine tailing storage facilities. Since 2021, he has found much success as a senior geotechnical engineer at the Barr Engineering Co. In this capacity, he is responsible for project planning, technical oversight and review, and mentorship of junior engineers. Prior to this role, Dr. Toohey was active as a geotechnical engineer providing technical oversight of geotechnical design for mine tailings storage facilities at AECOM from 2016 to 2021. Nathan's background includes advanced geotechnical laboratory testing, field investigation design, geotechnical and hydrogeological site characterization, liquefaction-triggering assessments, seismic and vibration analysis, as well as finite element and finite difference numerical modeling.

Dr. Toohey initially began his vocation working as a project coordinator and a civil engineer at Village Earth from 2003 until 2005. During this time, he also served as a senior technician and geotechnical engineer at Tetra Tech Inc. from 2003 to 2007 and in 2010. Between 2012 and 2016, Dr. Toohey garnered expertise as a geomechanical engineer at MicroSeismic Inc., conducting research and development to enhance microseismic analysis techniques and evaluating wellbore completions to understand and optimize hydraulic fracturing operations. He was awarded co-inventor status on two U.S. patents pertaining microseismic and geomechanical analysis. Dr. Toohey served as a post-doctoral research associate at the Colorado School of Mines where he aided in development of a real-time, vibration monitoring system for earth-pressure balance tunnel boring machines.

Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Toohey pursued an education at Carnegie Mellon University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Civil Engineering in 2001. He continued his academic efforts at the Colorado School of Mines, earning a master's degree in civil specialty engineering in 2009, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in civil specialty engineering in 2015, both with a geotechnical focus. Dr. Toohey is licensed as a professional engineer in the states of Wyoming and Colorado, as well as in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Among his professional accomplishments, Dr. Toohey is most proud of his involvement with the underwater foundation construction process for the MOSE Project conceived for inundation protection of Venice, Italy during his doctorate degree program. He co-developed a real-time, vibration-based analysis technique used to monitor the evolution of geomechanical properties during underwater, vibratory compaction of the subsea, structural fill foundation supporting the construction of retractable flood gate structures at the inlets to the Venice Lagoon. Dr. Toohey has garnered global consulting and research experience in geotechnics in Canada, Mexico, Europe, South America and the United States. Reflecting on his career, he attributes much of his success to the talented, creative and inspirational individuals who have mentored and inspired his innovations and his pursuit of a higher education. Looking toward the future, Dr. Toohey aspires to continue expanding the scope of geotechnical engineering in the mining industry to further increase dam safety and provide the highest level of service to mine tailings storage facilities.
