THE PLAINS, OH, August 28, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Lois Deimel Whealey is a distinguished biographee of Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are chosen from among a pool of the most prominent professionals and are selected on the basis of current reference value. Raised in Nevada, Ms. Whealey earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from Stanford University in 1951. Inspired by her mother's prosperous career as an educator, she subsequently worked as a fifth grade teacher at Owyhee Combined School in Owyhee, Nevada before completing a Master of Education at the University of Michigan in 1955. Throughout the following three years, Ms. Whealey found further success as a seventh grade teacher with the Fort Knox Community School District in Kentucky and as an adult basic education teacher for the United States Air Force in England.
After serving as a sixth grade teacher at Amerman Elementary School in Northville, Michigan, Ms. Whealey taught English and social studies to eighth grade students at Slauson Middle School between 1958 and 1959. While working as an instructor and as an administrative assistant at Ohio University in a part-time capacity, she earned a Master of Arts in political science at the aforementioned Athens, Ohio-based institution in 1975. Ms. Whealey subsequently excelled as a treasurer for the Regional County Planning Commission of Athens, Ohio between 1976 and 1978. During this period, she was simultaneously appointed as the president of the League of Women Voters of Athens County.
Between 1980 and 1986, Ms. Whealey thrived as the vice president of Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council, which provides educational and leadership development programs for members of the Girl Scouts of America up to 12 years of age. She also contributed to the Tri-County Career Center and the Ohio Environmental Council as a board member between 1984 and 1990. Towards the beginning of this period, Ms. Whealey was elected as the president of the Athens City School District Board of Education.
Throughout the 1990s, Ms. Whealey prospered as the president of the Athens Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and as a board member for the Ohio Alliance for the Environment, which eventually promoted her to the position of the vice president in 1998. From 2006 until 2020, she garnered additional recognition as the host of a public television program titled "Women Yesterday and Today," in which she interviewed highly accomplished women from various professional backgrounds on a weekly basis. During this period, Ms. Whealey simultaneously served as a board member for Organize Ohio and Ohio Women Inc. She also concluded her education in 2007, at which point she completed a Master of Science in social science at Ohio University.
In honor of her contributions as a community activist, Ms. Whealey has been distinguished with a host of accolades including a Spirit Award on behalf of the League of Women Voters of Athens County and the "Donna Chen Women's Equity Award" on behalf of Ohio University. She has also been recognized as a "Woman of Achievement" by Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council, which had previously celebrated her with a "Thanks" Badge in 1987. In 2017, Ms. Whealey was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Social Justice on behalf of the United Campus Ministry at Ohio University. Further accolades to her credit include a Community Service Award on behalf of the Athens County Community Services Council and the "Nora Price Award" on behalf of Planned Parenthood Southeast Ohio.
Ms. Whealey attributes a great deal of her success to her mother, who was an elected official in the predominantly male Nevada State Legislature during the 1930s. She is extremely proud to have inspired her daughter and granddaughter to follow in her footsteps by participating in the Girl Scouts of America. Ms. Whealey continues to maintain active affiliations with the American Association of University Women as well as the League of Women Voters and several community organizations within her hometown in Athens County, Ohio.
